What’s the difference between someone that is elite versus a world champion in sport?
I’ve thought about this question a lot.
You’ll hear people say things like;
Character
Mindset
Consistency
Dedication to craft
And they’re all part of it…
But as someone focused on developing talent, those feel more like visible traits, rather than what actually drives them underneath.
What I’ve come to notice is that those who go on to achieve at the very highest level carry a level of obsession that’s just… different.
It’s who they are, not what they do.
And that shows up most clearly in how they approach the simple, often boring work.
They’re willing to go back to it
again and again
without needing it to feel exciting
Done daily
Done properly
Done without much fuss
Not as a sacrifice…
just as part of the deal.
Because the best don’t see the “boring stuff” as something they move beyond.
They understand it *is the work.
And interestingly, as people improve, this is often where things start to shift.
Some begin to feel like they shouldn’t need to do those things anymore.
That they’ve earned the right to move on.
The very best tend to go the other way.
They come back to it. Stay with it. Refine it.
From the outside, it can look obsessive.
At times, even a bit selfish.
But it’s hard to pursue world-class improvement while being fully available to everything and everyone.
It requires a level of selectivity.
Of protecting time and energy.
Of saying no more often than yes.
Not selfish in the sense of ego,
but in service of what they’re trying to build.
Because when everything is aligned around getting better,
even the boring stuff starts to matter a bit more.
And over time, that tends to separate people.
