Kim Brandstrup has always been drawn to Bach. Yet, throughout his career, Brandstrup has held back from the orchestral works because he always felt the speed and the rhythmical complexities of the pieces were hard to match.

However, an encounter with a group of hip-hop dances so impressed him that he thought he might try and tackle some of the orchestral works. He found in the dancers a remarkable ability - to ‘hear’, analyse and ‘count’ music, and a sophisticated awareness of the subtle changes in the rhythmical subdivision.
He feels that there is a rhythmical dexterity and sensitivity in this new generation of dancers - a kind of rhythmical literacy that  makes it possible to tackle some of the compositional and rhythmical complexities in Bach’s music.

Kim Brandstrup and the musicians of OAE (Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment) have facilitated the meeting of a group of street dancers with the music of Bach -  helping them ‘break the code’ to the music and enabling them to work across style, tradition and the centuries to respond to the music’s exhilarating rhythmical power. While always encouraging the dancers to break any stylistic rule in the book in order to respond and enjoy the rhythmical power of Bach’s music.

Breaking Bach, as the program has been titled, will premiere at the Edinburgh International Festival (@edintfest) on August 20th. Limited tickets are still available. More info can be found at https://www.eif.co.uk/events/breaking-bach 30/05/2025
