Hi everyone!
Today we’re going to explore the Sweetheart variation and three different exits: the Basic Exit, the Helicopter Exit, and the Lady’s Exit.
For the Basic Exit, we use a variation similar to a roll-in, roll-out or a free spin. We begin in a cross-hand position, take the first step, and then create a prep. As the follower rolls in, the leader’s arm moves up and settles around the follower’s shoulder line.
Instead of pressing the arm downward, we invite the follower to respond with outside compression. This creates a comfortable and clear connection. From here, we can continue for two steps, four steps, or immediately raise the left hand and lead the exit.
For the Helicopter Exit, we continue the Sweetheart variation through count four. On counts five and six, we lead the follower into an outside turn while turning to the left ourselves. Between counts seven and eight, we create the “helicopter” action: we open the shoulders and arms and move gently from side to side. After that, we support the follower through a controlled and balanced exit.
The Lady’s Exit is a little simpler. We begin with the same Sweetheart variation. After count four, on counts five and six, the leader transfers the weight back onto the right foot while the follower travels slightly forward and balances on the ball of her right foot. She then returns and recreates the compression through the shoulder connection. From there, we create a prep and lead the exit.
