Positive Self-Leadership: The Bicycle Analogy for Direction & Drive

As a Positive Self-Leadership coach, I’ve discovered that there are two main reasons why most people fail to achieve personal success and happiness:

1/ Lack of clear vision and direction (i.e. they don’t know where they’re going or who they want to be); and

2/ Lack of sustained motivation (i.e. they don’t value the reason or purpose of why they do what they do).

Without a clear vision, people often find themselves drifting aimlessly. This lack of direction often leads to frustration and a sense of overwhelm.

Along with this, the absence of sustained motivation means that even when goals are set, the drive to accomplish them wanes over time, leading to procrastination and stagnation.

The result is a cycle where efforts become disjointed, progress is slow or nonexistent, and personal aspirations remain unfulfilled.

But, because we are all on a journey of personal success and happiness, reaching our desired destination requires the intentional combination of drive and direction.

Here is a simple formula that encapsulates this idea: DRIVE + DIRECTION = DESTINATION

Utilising the analogy of a bicycle, you can visualise the essential elements required for a balanced and focused approach to personal growth.

1. Your Personal Vision—Handlebars

Just like steering a bicycle with its handlebars, a clear vision guides your journey through life. It determines the direction you take and helps you to avoid distractions along the way, ensuring you stay on course toward your personal aspirations.

2. Your Personal Mission—Front Wheel

Your personal mission sets your course and keeps you moving forward. By aligning with your vision (the handlebars) it ensures that every action you take supports your overarching goals.

3. Your Life Purpose—Bicycle Frame

Your life purpose provides the structural frame upon which you can assemble your life. It gives your life stability and resilience, holding all your many and varied components together in balance.

4. Your Values—the Seat

Your values represent the seat of the bicycle, offering essential support and comfort along your ride. They ensure that your journey to success and prosperity is meaningful and ultimately fulfilling.

5. Your Goals—the Chain

Your goals act as the chain, the power link, ensuring all your efforts are translated into forward motion.

6: Your Habits and Attitude—the Pedals

Consistent habits and a positive attitude are the pedals that drive you forward. They ensure continuous effort and perseverance toward your dreams.

7. Relationships—Back Wheel:

Healthy relationships with friends, family, colleagues, and your community provide the necessary momentum to keep you moving.
They support and motivate you through highs and lows.

By integrating these 7 elements, you can achieve a balanced, focused ride toward personal success and happiness.

Positive Self-Leadership: Get Clarity and Direction with The Life Leadership Compass

A vital part of being effective is knowing where you want to go. You need clarity (vision) and direction (intention).

You wouldn’t board a plane or ferry for 7 hours not knowing the destination you want to arrive at.

Likewise, your time on this planet needs to have a destination—you need to know what outcomes you want to achieve throughout your life.

As Seneca, a Roman poet and philosopher, said: “If you do not know to which port you are sailing, then no wind is helpful.”
The Life Leadership Compass is a visual representation of the process of personal and professional clarity and direction.

You can use the Life Leadership Compass to identify the areas on which you need to work and improve, as well as strengthening the areas you are already good at.

Think of the Life Leadership Compass not as a set series of rules to follow, rather as a guide with which you can tailor to your own needs.

At the centre of the Life Leadership Compass is you. Everything in your life begins and ends with you, including who you want to be and doing what you want to do.

Positive Self-Leadership: Transform Your Life with The Effectiveness Equation

Since 2008, I’ve learned that one of the biggest stumbling blocks for my clients is know-how. They simply don’t know where to begin or what to do to change their life for the better.

So let’s talk about one of the concepts of Positive Self-Leadership, “The 2 States of Transformation”, and how you can use these states to build better habits and achieve your goals.

As a general rule, everybody has two states of existence:
1. The state where they are now—current.
2. The state where they want to be—desired.

But whatever state you are in currently, the successful arrival at your desired future state requires 3 things:

1. An effective formula.
2. Effective discipline.
3. Effective habits.

Most people, however, fail to achieve the results they want and are less effective than they had hoped for because:

1. They fail to create or find an effective formula.
2. They are not disciplined even if they do find an effective formula.
3. They establish bad habits.

If you don’t find an effective formula, then any formula will do. But that means any result will do, which is not conducive to a healthy, prosperous, or happy life.

Following an effective formula, being more disciplined, and developing better habits are essential steps in becoming effective and successful in your endeavours, and each arises from a positive mental attitude—from the way you think.

What You Can Do: Find an Effective Formula and Stick to It

Positive Self-Leadership is about embracing good self-management, nurturing a positive mindset, cultivating the right attitude, being authentic, and striving to become the best version of yourself.

At the core of my coaching programs and the philosophy behind them is the principle of positive self-leadership.

S: Self-Management: When you have developed good self-management habits, you will gain insight into your motivations and desires. You will therefore gain more trust and confidence in your abilities, make better decisions, have greater self-belief, and better navigate challenges.

M: Mindset: When you adopt a mindset of possibility and opportunity, you will begin to approach life with curiosity and optimism, embracing each moment as an opportunity for learning and growth.

A: Attitude: Self-leadership also requires the right attitude, which encompasses selflessness, big-picture thinking, open-mindedness, positivity, commitment, purpose, and conviction.

R: Reconnection with Your Authentic Self: Perhaps most importantly, self-leadership is an intentional reconnection with your authentic self by honoring your values, passions, and purpose. It’s getting to that point where you are happy in your own skin.

T: Transformation: Self-leadership facilitates transformation into the best version of yourself by embracing growth and personal development.

By embodying these principles, you unleash your innate potential for health, prosperity, and happiness.

Failure, Rejection, Change: How to Reframe the Fears That Hold You Back

Hi Dr. Scott Zarcinas (aka DoctorZed) here, Founder of 818: Unlocking Your Life.

Over the years I’ve noticed three main types of fear that hold my clients back from reaching their full potential and experiencing true happiness.

These 3 predominant fears—fear of failure, rejection, and change—negatively affect our choices and behaviors, impacting our ability to live fulfilling lives and achieve our goals.

Liberation from these fears is crucial for our mental and emotional well-being, as well as our capacity to fully engage with life and pursue our passions and dreams.

1/ Fear of Failure:

The fear of failure stems from the belief that making mistakes or falling short of expectations will result in ridicule, mockery, or disappointment.

It is often fueled by the need for perfectionism and a desire to avoid judgement from others.

This can manifest as procrastination or avoidance behaviour, thus hindering personal growth and achievement.

2/ Fear of Rejection:

The fear of rejection arises from a deep-seated need for acceptance and belonging.

It stems from the fear of being judged, abandoned, or ostracised by others.

This can lead to self-imposed isolation and reluctance to take risks in relationships or to pursue opportunities.

3/ Fear of Change:

The fear of change is rooted in uncertainty and a reluctance to step outside our comfort zones.

It arises from the fear of the unknown and the belief that change will bring discomfort or upheaval.

This fear can prevent us from embracing new experiences or opportunities, keeping us stuck in familiar but stagnant patterns.

What You Can Do: Reframe Your Fears, Regain Your Life

To free yourself from these fears, start by challenging the underlying beliefs that fuel them by ‘reframing’ them:

1/ Reframe Failure as Feedback:

Instead of viewing failure as a reflection of your worth or abilities, reframe it as valuable feedback that can guide future efforts.

Then you can see failure as a stepping stone towards success rather than a roadblock.

2/ Reframe Rejection as Redirection:

Instead of internalising rejection as a personal failure, reframe it as redirection toward paths better suited to your growth and happiness.

Trust that rejection often leads to new opportunities and experiences aligned with your true desires.

When rejection is embraced as a catalyst for growth rather than a setback, you cultivate resilience and diminish its power over you.

3/ Reframe Change as a Benefit:

When you shift your focus from the potential drawbacks of change to the opportunities it presents for personal growth and fulfillment (e.g. visualise the positive outcomes that may result from change, such as learning new skills, expanding your horizons, and discovering new passions), you reframe change as an exciting adventure rather than a threat and thereby cultivate a sense of optimism and anticipation.

Stop Negative Self-Talk: How to Quieten the Imposter and Empower Your Mind

Hi Dr. Scott Zarcinas (aka DoctorZed) here, Founder of 818: Unlocking Your Life.

Many of my clients are mentally tired and exhausted.

They don’t actually say, “I’m trapped in a cycle of self-doubt and negativity,” but that’s exactly what they’re experiencing. It’s one of the main underlying causes of their mental exhaustion.

What they want is a way out. To drop the mental sluggishness, to stop the incessant negative chatter of the imposter, to feel human again.

So I offer them the best way I know to feel reinvigorated and energetic again:

Taking back control of their inner dialogue.
And this is how I help them transform their self-talk to spark positivity and reclaim control.

1/ Harnessing the Power of Positive Self-Talk:
Let’s say you find yourself criticising your every move or dwelling on past mistakes. Then it’s important to recognise that the words you speak to yourself have a profound impact on your emotions and actions.

Instead of berating yourself, try replacing negative thoughts with affirmations of self-approval and self-acceptance.

For example, when faced with a challenge, tell yourself, “I am capable and resilient. I can overcome this obstacle.”

2/ Understanding the Roots of Negative Beliefs:
If you struggle with feelings of inadequacy or fear of rejection, these beliefs have likely stemmed from early experiences, such as childhood criticism or neglect.

By acknowledging the origins of these beliefs, you can begin to challenge and reframe them.

For instance, if you were often criticised as a child, remind yourself that your worth is not defined by others’ opinions. You are inherently valuable and deserving of love and respect.

3/ Practicing Reparenting Techniques:
Furthermore, if you long for the comfort and security you never received as a child, the practice of “reparenting” offers a practical way to heal past wounds.

For instance, you can provide comfort and validation by writing a letter to your younger self or practicing self-care.

This will address your previously unmet emotional needs with compassion and understanding, cultivating a sense of self-acceptance and peace in this moment now.

4/ Adopting Empowering Self-Statements:
Suppose you are tired of feeling insecure and unworthy. In that case, you can take a leaf from the books of those who exude confidence and self-assurance and adopt empowering self-statements that reflect your inherent worth and potential.

For example, repeat phrases like, “I am worthy of love and respect,” or “I trust myself to navigate life’s challenges with honesty and resilience.”

As you internalise these affirmations, you’ll notice a shift in your self-talk and a newfound sense of confidence and empowerment.

I was talking to a friend the other day, who said he was ‘checking out’ some free personal development stuff, and a couple of online courses he’d enrolled in, looking for how to ‘be happier’ and ‘not worry so much about everything’.

Let’s face it, most people know what they want and what makes them happy.

->DIY is great when it’s not life-threatening. (For example, you do NOT DIY the car that you and your family drive.)

But your happiness and your well-being is too important to DIY—it’s not a hobby project.
