***An update on the Algal Bloom***

As you can imagine there is plenty of work going on behind the scenes both at a state and club level. There are still a lot of unknowns as to exactly what this season will look like but what we do know is that Nippers is definitely going ahead!

The SLSSA Algal bloom page has all the current information on it relevant to the surf season - https://www.surflifesavingsa.com.au/algal-bloom

What we can confirm:

1. Water & Beach Conditions

SLSSA has upgraded the risk rating tool that we already use to assess water safety conditions to include risk from the algal bloom. A risk rating will be done each Saturday between 11.30am-12pm prior to Nippers to help us plan what can be done on that day. Patrol will also do risk ratings during the afternoon.

If water activities are deemed unsafe for any reason, we will endeavor to do beach activities, if both the water and beach are unsuitable we hope to hold more specific surf ed sessions / CPR training for older nippers up at the club (or we may all just enjoy a BBQ and catch up!!).

As has happened in previous years due to weather conditions, there will be occasions where the session will be shortened, or some age groups may be cancelled. Flexibility and communication will be key. If the session needs to be cancelled, we will notify all families in Spond by 12pm on the day. It is hugely important parents have Spond notifications on and are checking each week for updates. Details provided on joining.

2. Carnivals

The carnival schedule is up on the surf calendar along with current locations – again water/beach conditions will be assessed and venues may be changed last minute depending on how the algal bloom is affecting different beaches at that time – fortunately there are a lot of different beaches to choose from!

3. Nipper Safety

It goes without saying that Nipper safety is and always has been our #1 priority – whether that’s having the right water cover for the conditions or making the right choices regarding the algal bloom. That said, as parents, you hold the ultimate responsibility for deciding whether your Nipper participates on any given day.

To make it as safe as possible for all we ask that nippers that have asthma and/or respiratory conditions that may put them at increased risk due to the Algal bloom let us know.

Nippers has never been a drop-and-go sport – but this season especially a parent/guardian MUST be on the beach at all times - if your child is asthmatic you must be there in the event they require their puffer. Patrol capabilities are being upgraded this season also to better deal with respiratory issues if they arise.

The whole junior team is doing our best to ensure we can still have a fun, safe and successful Nippers season - and we ask for your support and understanding as we navigate the challenges that will no doubt arise over the course of the coming months!

The weather is often not awesome in November anyway so we will try to get through a lot of our surf ed lessons in those first few weeks and get that out of the way for the nice weather days!!

We look forward to welcoming you all back to Nippers.

🌊 Aldinga Bay SLSC Ready for the Season No Matter What! 🏖️

As we gear up for another great season at Aldinga Bay Surf Life Saving Club, we're reminded that being part of the surf lifesaving community means more than just sunny skies and calm seas. It's about resilience, adaptability, and always being there for one another, on the beach, in the water, or wherever we're needed most.

Like many along the coast, we’re keeping a close eye on the current algal bloom situation. We understand your concerns, and we want you to know that Surf Life Saving SA is working directly with the State Government to make sure we can operate safely and confidently.

✅ Beaches remain open, but everyone is advised to avoid any discoloured or foamy water.
🏄‍♀️ At Aldinga Bay SLSC, patrols, nippers, training and events are still on track with regular local assessments and flexible plans to adjust as needed.

If the water’s off-limits, we’ll keep active on the sand. If plans need to shift, we’ll shift with them. That’s what being a lifesaving club is all about, turning up, backing each other, and keeping our community safe and strong 💛❤️

Algal Bloom Update – Dedicated SLSSA Webpage 📢

Surf Life Saving SA is gearing up for another huge summer, and your safety remains our top priority.

We understand there are many questions about the evolving algal bloom (Karenia mikimotoi) situation, which is why we’re working closely with the State Government and key agencies to stay informed and aligned. This includes developing tailored advice for our members, based on the latest information from Government, to ensure we can continue delivering vital surf lifesaving services and water safety programs throughout the 2025/26 season 🌊

The good news from State Government and experts is that currently beaches are still open. For official updates and information as the situation continues to evolve, visit www.sa.gov.au/algalbloom

To keep our clubs, volunteers, and wider community up to date, we’ve created a dedicated webpage outlining the algal bloom, what we’re doing, and any impacts on our services, activities and programs across all departments. This page will be updated regularly as we continue to monitor the situation and respond accordingly. Visit https://www.surflifesavingsa.com.au/algal-bloom

Rest assured, we will take any and all necessary actions as new information becomes available. You can trust that we’re committed to ensuring everyone can have a safe, informed and enjoyable summer ☀️
