Remembering Kim Smith on the 17th anniversary of his passing.
In 1974 in VFA Recorder, the name Kimberley Kenneth-Smith appeared on the team list for Prahran due to an error by an official at the VFA. Kim Smith was a product of Brighton Grammar and Beaumaris Football Club and in his debut season kicked 55 goals to head the club’s list.
The following season found him at Melbourne, but he could only break into the seniors for four games (3 goals), but he won the league reserves goalkicking with 61 goals.
Returning to the Two Blues in 1976, Smith was the club’s top scorer every year until his retirement in 1982, eight times in total. He kicked 95 goals in Prahran’s premiership season of 1978 including 7 in the famous Grand Final victory over Preston. His tally of 97 goals in 1979 was equal with Geelong West’s Joe Radojevic to head the VFA. In 1980 he finished on 93.
In 136 games for Prahran, Smith scored 610 goals, headed only by George Hawkins in the Two Blues’ VFA history, and at the time of his retirement eleventh on the VFA list.
He was also a regular member of VFA rep teams.
After retirement he concentrated on building his business - Outback Plants, which exported Australian native plants to the USA.
A dedicated clubman, Smith, along with his former coach Mick Erwin and a small but tenacious committee, was instrumental in saving Prahran from financial ruin after the club was forced out of the soon-to-be VSFL in 1994, helping the club rebuild and repay all of its creditors, before returning the club to the field in 1999 through the amalgamation with Southbank in the VAFA.
He donated a perpetual trophy to be awarded to the club’s leading goal kicker, since renamed the Hawkins-Smith Trophy.
In 2002, Smith was selected in Prahran’s Team of the Century.
After a long battle with lung cancer, Kim passed away on 16 September 2009, at the age of 57.
In April 2026, Kim Smith was inducted as an inaugural member of the Prahran Football Club Hall of Fame.
