🏏 A Fantastic Day of Cricket in O’Connell
What a great day it was hosting I Zingari Australia — one of the world’s oldest cricket clubs, formed in 1845 — as they made the trip from Sydney to take on O’Connell Cricket Club, proudly established in 1880.
While the visitors came away with the win in the T20, our boys stayed right in the contest through 15 overs with the required run rate well within reach — it just wasn’t to be in the end.
But truth be told, the real winner on the day was cricket.
From the first ball to the final drink at the O’Connell Pub, it was everything the game should be — competitive, respectful, and full of great spirit. A beautiful lunch, shared over a few wines and beers, added to the occasion and set the tone for what became a fantastic day both on and off the field.
It was also fantastic to welcome three new players making their O’Connell debuts — Clinton Moxon, Tom Goode and Hugo Bird — a great sign for the continued growth of the club.
And it was incredibly special to see two of our young players, Hugo Bird and Henry Storey, batting together — a glimpse into the future of O’Connell cricket that the I Zingari players thoroughly enjoyed being part of.
Presentations were held after the match with both clubs exchanging gifts and recognising players, before heading to the pub to continue the camaraderie.
This match marks the beginning of something bigger for O’Connell Cricket Club — a journey toward becoming a leading invitational cricket club, playing against like-minded teams who love to compete hard, but value relationships, tradition, and the future of the game just as much.
Both clubs are already looking forward to doing it all again — whether that’s I Zingari returning to O’Connell or us making the trip to their home ground in Camden.
Thanks again to I Zingari Australia for making the trip and helping create such a memorable day.
Here’s to the start of a great tradition.
