🐴 Every purebred Haflinger alive today descends from one stallion foaled in 1874.

His name was 249 Folie, and he was born in the village of Hafling in South Tyrol — the place the breed is named for. There is no committee behind the Haflinger, no long list of foundation animals. There is one horse, and everything after him is his descendants, running down through seven recognised stallion lines that still structure the studbook today.

Think about what that means for a moment. Every chestnut Haflinger with that pale flaxen mane, every one of the fifty of them carrying loads for the Austrian Army in the Alps, every pony pulling a sleigh in a Tyrolean valley, every calm little schoolmaster teaching a child to sit up straight — all of them, without exception, trace back through the generations to one horse standing in one alpine village a hundred and fifty years ago.

Most breeds are a river with many sources. This one is a river with a single spring.

Folie could not have known that his name would still be printed in pedigree papers in the twenty-first century. But it is, on every single one.
