What a shot.... missing summer....

Only 350 miles from the Mississippi river mouth? And right in the world’s largest ocean dead zone? It feels like it’s not only “cloud cover” and “warming temperatures” that caused the depleting oxygen levels...Yet mainstream news is not mentioning agricultural runoff as a cause.

Ocean dead zones are areas of ocean containing little to no oxygen. It is a phenomenon that typically peaks in the summer and dissipates in the winter. They are caused by nutrient pollution from intensive animal farming and industrial agriculture. The nutrients cause unnatural algal blooms that deplete the dissipated oxygen of the area and kill all of the marine life below.

The Gulf of Mexico dead zone is predicted to reach 4,280sq miles this summer (larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined), Roughly 11,000 sqkm.

Again it seems that climate change is agribusiness’ quick scape goat? Why is nobody checking how large has the Gulf of Mexico’s ocean dead zone expanded to this year?

A better question would be: why has an ocean dead zone been normalized?

In 2019 @standmighty launched a campaign against US meat processing giant @tysonfoods called #CleanItUpTyson as a report revealed that they were the largest polluters of the Mississippi river, hence also the leading cause of the ocean dead zone.

In 2020 @tysonfoods responded that it would implement changes to address contamination in its food supply.

In 2022 @TysonFoods was accused of corporate greenwashing and remains the US’s number one water polluter among agricultural companies and the second-largest greenhouse gas emitter in the meat industry. They simply pushed their sustainability target to 2025...

Why does big business get away with killing vast areas of vital ecosystems? From the soil to the ocean. When will governments stop bending over to corporate lobbying and address a broken food system?
