Does your family or friends have a footy tipping competition? Mine does and it is very serious business. Our competition is called “Sheepstations” and we all have cute names like Hay Bales, Shear Luck, Rosemary, Baastermind, Dags, Ramdom Picks and B-ewe-ty. Sounds about right for my family and a ring in neighbour.
What has that got to do with our Thursday Ladies you ask? We have the same kind of family/friend relationship. We have a great time whilst at the same time we do our best and try not to take ourselves too seriously. All around the course I hear encouraging remarks and appropriate oos and ahs, and “oh no” if one of us hits into a bunker or water. How lovely is that!
Welcome to our new lady, Natalie Humphries. We hope you had a great round with Karron Donnelly today. A score of 33 was a fabulous score.
We played a very relaxed game of Ambrose today. There were lots of smiles in the clubhouse afterwards and reports of great games. It’s such a pleasant team game and takes all the pressure off and puts all the fun in. Great morning girls!
We have some big hitters in our group and a lot of up and comings. Haley Brownlie continues to dazzle. Haley hit a long 2nd shot today which her teammates described as HUUUGGGEEE! Jane Straker is remarkable. Karen Corcoran is always impressive. Playing Ambrose today, we had to choose the best shot and the team played from that spot. A lady in our group (one of said big hitters) suggested we take a ball further back than hers. Her reasoning was it wouldn’t change how many shots it would take us to get to the green.
I have two things to say to that. When you are not a big hitter, every millimeter counts….and what is the point of hitting the ball further than you can see?
Have you noticed how many ex hockey players and tennis players play golf? They have great hand/eye coordination. When I mentioned I played netball and swimming at school I was told “oh well, you won’t drown in the pond!!!” Ha ha ladies.
Reminder to ladies who would like to have a practice hit - have a look at the Wantima Country Club bookings and you are bound to find someone to play with. Just put your name down and turn up. You don’t need permission.
Margaret Reid’s game is improving in leaps and bounds and she believes it’s because she is getting in some extra rounds. In fact Margaret has beaten her nemesis hole - the 13th - and has declared it defeated!
Trish Parr was very happy to par the 15th today. Well done! When I approached Daph Bale’s group today she hung her head in shame and declared “I can’t putt”. The ground staff continue to ignore my request for bigger holes so I guess you will just have to keep at it.
Do you remember Audrey Foley of famed freckle favoritism? Horror of all horrors!! They only gave her one freckle today. That did not make her feel better after she hit a brilliant drive on the last hole but quickly found out she was on the 9th instead of the 18th. Sorry sirs for butting into your game.
Nearest to the Pin on the 10th was won today by Jean Brew.
Nearest to the Pin on the 12th hole for one shot, all grades - we’ll keep trying!
Approach shot on the 16th hole was won by Helen Tennison and Maureen Burke.
Longest Drive was won by Jane Straker (A Grade) and Deb Phillips (B Grade) and Glen Ray (C Grade). Great work ladies.
Maree Cameron had her first ever chip in on the 18th. Brilliant.
And the winners today …
First place - Jane Straker, Betty Bailey and Chris Grant team
Second place - Helen Tennison and Maureen Burke team
Ball rundown - Audrey Foley, Kay Swyny, Karen Corcoran, Karron Donnelly and Natalie Humphries.
The raffle was one by Andrea Price with second prize to Audrey Foley and free game to Helen Tennison. Good for you.
Reminders - AGM is on 5 November with a light lunch. Put you name on the list for catering purposes if you are coming. Nominations for all the committee positions are open. If you have anything you would like discussed or voted on please fill in the appropriate paperwork. Karron Donnelly is kindly coordinating all of that.
Our Christmas Party is on 3 December (put that one in the diary too).
A big thank you to Susan Miller and Jane Straker for manning the Starter’s Table. Reminder to Di Porter and Sharon Hodgkins that you are on next week.
Next week we are playing 4BBB.
Remember the hottest person in the room is not necessarily the best looking. If you’re the right age you will be able to work that one out.
See you all again next week.
Photos - Winners are Grinners (Jane Straker, Chris Grant, Betty Bailey); A group opinion of the 12th hole (Trish, Andrea, Glennys and Shirley); and a picture of some of our ladies enjoying their golfing holiday in Malaysia (can you spot Maree Logan and Punya Sharma?). Tina Gough is over there too but she has a great story to tell us about her “passport incident”.
