A year older and nowhere near where my absurdly confident past self thought I would be, but I guess it’s just as John Lennon put it: “life’s what happens while you’re busy planning for it” or something to that effect.

I, of course, still have plans for what I want to achieve, in fitness, in life, but perhaps the lesson I wish to impart is that it’s okay for their to be a few left turns on that path. Hell, they might just lead you where you needed to go all along without even realising it.

Ramble over, thank you again to everyone for your lovely messages and kind words. And to those who went the extra mile and bought me gifts (mostly food), my bulking phase is muchly appreciative ☺️

“Look closely at the present you are constructing. It should look like the future you are dreaming.” - Alice Walker

Nothing like a solitary walk in nature to realign oneself, or so I would argue. It might be the oxygen-rich air, or the lack of things to fixate on, or maybe just the serenity of silence, I wager it is all of these things for me.

So what new discoveries have I made? Sadly, they may not have the same relevance and impact for you as they have for me at the current moment, we are all on our own unique journeys after all, but here they are nevertheless:

- The ability to delay immediate gratification is a defining characteristic of the successful.

- Rationality can make us cold or it can make us wise. It is unwise to choose pessimism whatever the case.

- Getting curious and asking questions is a cure for negative thoughts.

- Complaining is fanning a flame that would otherwise have gone out.

- In order to be of valuable service to others, our own needs must first be met.

- The answer to you what you will become is in what you like.

I hope you’ve all had a great week, and I can’t to launch into the next 🙏🏻

Some of my happiest and most vivid experiences were made with a pocketful of coins in the bright, happy glow of arcade machines.

I was never any good at pac-man, but that didn’t stop me spending a week’s pocket money on it. A game I wasn’t so bad at was Time Crisis, and I remember feeling like a total badass with my hat turned backwards and gun held sideways in one hand (when pretty girls would walk past naturally).

My love for video games hasn’t faded after all these years, but that feeling of moving through an arcade, the faint smell of spilt cola slowly evaporating, the excited shouts of friends competing on Daytona, is now just a sweet memory.

One I frequently get to revisit, when I wear this shirt, as I am right now 😁

I want to hear your nerdy arcade/gaming stories in the comments!

5 things that have improved the quality of time I spend looking at my phone:

➖Limit notifications as much as possible. Of course, there will be those important work messages you need to respond too, but I guarantee the majority are just weak excuses to open an app and p**s away precious time. If feasible, turn off alert sounds as well, they will make it extra hard for your brain to say no.

➖State your purpose aloud before opening the app. “I am opening Instagram to respond to X’s message” and do only that. For content creators, a rule that has helped me is to only open the app if I have something to share. Create vs consume.

➖It is now possible (at least on iPhones) to delete app icons from your Home Screen without actually deleting the app. I’ve found this helps with the more addictive apps like tiktok. I don’t just mindlessly open it anymore because it’s in front of me.

➖A phone’s place is not anywhere near your bed if your intention is to sleep. If you use it as your alarm, set it to sleep mode and place it in the opposite corner of your room (added benefit of having to get up to switch it off).

➖Audio messages take less time and are more personal. Speaking of, when will we have the option to convey captions as audio recordings. This took way too long to write out. 😄

If you made it this far, thanks for reading. I’d love to hear you tips and tricks for being better at phone stuff

“You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment. Fools stand on their island of opportunities and look toward another land. There is no other land; there is no other life but this.” - Henry David Thoreau

A little reminder before the start of a fresh new week. I hope we’ll all go into it with an open mind and maximise its fullest potential.

What’s something you’re going to focus on improving/working on this week? Comment below :)

5 things I wish I knew when I started calisthenics:

➖The community will support and nurture you if you let it. Asking for help has never been easier and I guarantee that almost all the people you look up to will be willing to help, and many will have run into the same problems as you at some point. Reach out.

➖We value rep, set, and weight counts, but we value form even more. A perfect bodyweight push up beats a weighted muscle up with s**t form every day of the week.

➖The equipment you need (others may have a different opinion) Gymnast rings, a set of resistance bands, paralettes (small to medium size) Optional: chalk, wrist wraps, compression sleeves. If you have the budget: weight belt

➖You will get tendinitis at some point, most likely whilst chasing a new skill with enthusiasm. Keep in mind that your tendons will take months to adjust to the new training load vs the weeks it will take for your muscles to adjust. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

➖You will have calloused hands. These are a sign of hard work that we, in the community, love but the rest of the world does not. Invest in good hand cream and exfoliate often if you want your loved one to continue loving you.

Let me know if you have any questions, or if you’d like Part 2. I’ve got plenty more info to share! Hope this helps some of you!
