I love helping people with their airguns. My advice is based on almost 60 years of enjoying them and operating the very successful Beeman Precision Airguns Australia from 1992 to 2009.
I sold thousands of airguns in that period and had a terrific customer base and worked hard to look after it
Dad and I were owners and co directors of Greenfield Mowers so the airguns were a very nice hobby and pastime that allowed me to visit SHOT Show and Beeman’s on a regular basis

Robert and Tosh treated me like the son they never had and gave me access to the service and business side.

Robert gave me the template for the little microcosm Australia was and my approach to marketing precision airguns was diametrically opposed to previous attempts

Break barrel vs Fixed barrel

Most know that I am not a fixed barrel fanatic. They’re good for business but now I find them too heavy and hard to c**k and I do not like sliding breeches

Beeman’s showed me their gallery of gruesome photos!

I get tired of the same tripe over and over again about the fallacy of superior accuracy with fixed barrel

It just isn’t true !

The most accurate springer I ever shot was my Feinwerkbau 124 .177. It was break barrel with no barrel lock .

Break barrel format is much less trouble in high power sporters.

Hardly a day goes past when I’m not receiving calls from desperate P*P owners with troubles

Invariably , it’s leaks and they can be awfully difficult and time consuming to locate

I just don’t want to involved and will continue in my happy place looking after nice springers

My blunt advice is as always to buy the best springer you can from Weihrauch or Air Arms , get it tuned and buy a gorgeous .22LR

Broken mainsprings

I’m pretty sure that I’ve never seen a broken mainspring in a springer with a leather piston seal. I’ve seen plenty of buckled and compressed ones especially in Gecado’s when I was a teenager but not broken .

Oldies like Webley MK3 , Falke 80/90 and Anschutz 335 had short stout springs that seemed to last forever without fatigue and could be reused.

Broken mainsprings weren’t really a thing until we went to nylon seals and now I’ve seen plenty!

Leather was amazing stuff. Kept supple , it conforms to the compression chamber walls and in an HW35 for example it accommodates internal diameters either side of the claimed 30mm.

Leather sealed springers are generally soft to shoot and I remember how nice the old HW55’s shot and how roughly the last nylon sealed ones were in comparison

The transition to nylon seals was not very smooth and I wonder how something like an HW80 would perform with a leather seal

I remember that the new fangled nylon seals were non drying and parachuted on firing …..yeah right.

The first nylon seals I saw fail were in my 1976 FWB 124’s and they crumbled like old cheddar

You have to keep on top of them and monitor their performance with a quality chronograph. I’m beginning to believe 5 years is their safe lifespan now . Spanish manufacturers drown them in oil at the factory and that’s the kiss of death

Definitely stop shooting them when they’re on the way out !

New springers

I’m often asked for my recommendations for a new springer . That’s easy!
I only like Weihrauch and Air Arms

My opinion is based on the overall quality and performance and what they’re like to work on. It’s important that they can be tuned with a Maccari kit

I abhor plastics in trigger and safety assemblies!

My favourite Weihrauchs are the HW30S , 50S and 95 . I now personally find the 80 and 90 too heavy and hard to c**k and I’ve never been a fan of the 97K . The HW98 has the 95 action and is set up for field target and outdoor silhouette . It’s too muzzle heavy for field use

Air Arms have the excellent TX200.

I can’t stand a rotten trigger ! All the HW’s gave the incomparable Rekord match trigger and the TX has their version of it

Nothing else on the market is worth looking at

If you can’t buy a new HW , pick up a nice preowned one. Always expect it needs a rebuild . If it looks nice, grab it

My thoughts are always honest and blunt!

You need a top quality gunsmith screwdriver kit. I use this Wheeler kit and have never broken a bit or been stuck for one!

I’ve had lots of screwdriver kits over the decades and this is my favourite
