Leaders - I have a question for you:
Have you created an environment where it's safe for people to tell the truth?
That means people can:
🗣️ speak up.
🗣️ challenge ideas.
🗣️ admit mistakes.
🗣️ ask for help.
🗣️ say "I don't know."
🗣️ raise a concern.
And yes - that also means sometimes disagree with their leader.
When people are spending their energy trying to avoid looking stupid, difficult, incompetent or "negative"…
They're not spending that energy solving an actual problem, or being productive.
And that's a performance issue.
If you're not sure... think about the last time one of your team members challenged you on something. Can't think of a time? You probably haven't created the safety to do so.
The goal isn't a team where everyone agrees with you all the time.
You want a team where people are willing to tell you what you need to hear... not just what you WANT to hear.
That's where better decisions happen, problems get surfaced earlier, and performance grows.
What could you do this week to make your team feel safe enough to tell you the truth?
