What you’re seeing here is the same swimmer, swimming the same stroke.

In two different ways.

Above, Katie swims generic freestyle - six beat kick with a symmetrical, perfectly balanced stroke.

Below is her race stroke - 1-6 beat varied kick, asymmetrical stroke with a head lift and swing and over-reach as she lunges up and down.

Katie's stroke doesn't 'break down' as she adds speed and distance. Her stroke is what happens when the foundations are mastered before the mold is broken.

Learning to swim doesn’t start with movement.
It starts with comfort.

Before a swimmer begins to float, kick, or coordinate their arms and legs, they need to feel safe in the water.

Fear changes everything.
When someone is anxious, their breathing becomes shallow, their body becomes tense, and learning stops.

That’s why comfort and desensitisation are so important, especially for swimmers who are nervous, hesitant, or recovering from a bad experience.

For little swimmers, this often happens through play.
Games, songs, splashing, pouring water, and ducking under the water to collect toys.

For older swimmers, it can be much simpler...sitting in the water, laying back, and feeling the water support their body.

And at the center of it all is breath control.

When a swimmer learns to control their breath, they also learn to control their heart rate and calm their body.
That’s why breath control is the very first of the 7 fundamentals of swimming.

Sometimes parents worry that playing in shallow water outside of lessons is a waste of time.

It isn’t.
It’s part of the learning process.

And during lessons, purposeful play matters too.
Thoughtfully selected games and songs aren’t just entertainment… they’re quietly building skills.

Because comfortable swimmers become confident swimmers.
And confident swimmers are ready to learn.

When you see random drills posted online…ask yourself “Who are they talking to?”

Because drills aren’t universal.

Every swimmer has different faults, different timing issues, different limitations — which means they need specific drills, for specific reasons.

The problem with copying every drill you see is this: If you don’t know what the drill is for,
you don’t know what you’re trying to fix.

And sometimes…
the wrong drill can actually make your stroke worse.

Drills aren’t there to fill time.
They’re there to refine something very specific:
• Breath timing
• Catch
• Alignment
• Rotation
• Body position

If you can’t answer “what is this drill fixing or what is its focus?” you probably shouldn’t be doing it.

I recently watched an online coach suggest doing Unco (my own personal favourite drill) with a pull-buoy, which I then tried and failed miserably at.

It felt horrible and it was ridiculously hard to navigate down the lane. I can't image how a struggling swimmer would cope with it?!

Ever tried a drill you saw online that made you feel incompetent? Let me know in the comments.

Swim Teachers, these flashcards started with a simple problem I wanted to solve.

I watched kids struggle to follow instructions they couldn’t picture.

I watched teachers repeat cues over and over.
And I watched swimmers guess instead of understand.

Body position, breath control, timing; kids can’t see what they’re meant to do.
So I stopped hoping someone would make the resources we needed…
and designed them myself.

These flashcards weren’t made to decorate your pool deck.
They're made to clarify expectations, speed up learning, and give swimmers a mental model before they move.

See it. Say it. Hear it. Swim it.

If you’ve ever thought, “I wish I had something like that,”
this is it.

Explore the flashcards in my store and teach with clarity, not guesswork.

Not all swimming confidence is built in the pool💦

Some swimmers arrive at lessons full of enthusiasm and ready to learn.
Others arrive anxious or overwhelmed; and that’s not a failure.

Preparation at home can make lessons feel familiar, fun and less frightening.

Newsflash!! 💯
It doesn’t need to be deep water.
It doesn’t need to be perfect.
It just needs to be calm and consistent.

Swimming confidence can be built long before the first lap🏊🏼‍♀️

Save or share it with a parent who needs reassurance

and remember, we have the resources to make any lesson fun and educational
