TURN TWO WITH A SHOVEL PASS. ⚾👊
Double plays don’t always happen perfectly.
Sometimes the feed is awkward. Sometimes you have to make a play from an uncomfortable position. That’s why being able to adapt and make athletic throws is such an important skill for infielders.
In this carousel, former JUCO, D1, and professional player Jarrod Belbin breaks down the keys to turning a double play at second base with a shovel pass.
The key points:
⚾ Start with your foot on the bag as the second baseman, stay connected to the base while reading the play.
⚾ Follow the shortstop with your chest, adjust your body position as the shortstop moves, while staying ready to receive the ball.
⚾ Step and shovel instead of forcing an uncomfortable throw, use your footwork and an athletic shovel pass to get the ball out quickly.
The best infielders are comfortable making uncomfortable plays. 💪
