Today I had the privilege of performing for Indian Independence Day at Estia Aged Care, and I met some truly wonderful people. ✨🇮🇳

One beautiful lady, Saroja Ji (pictured here), told me that the performance took her straight back to India. She shared stories of her childhood, including a precious memory of holding Mahatma Gandhi’s hand when she was a little girl.

When I was leaving, she was crying ❤️

Moments like this remind me why art matters so deeply. To touch even one person’s heart, awaken a memory, or create a moment of connection...

Art connects us across generations, cultures and time. And today, I felt incredibly grateful to be part of that connection. 🙏✨

I'm so looking forward to sharing the beauty of Odissi dance with beginner dancers on the Sunshine Coast starting in 2 days on July 19.

Odissi is much more than learning steps and choreography. Through movement, rhythm, gesture, expression, and storytelling, it offers a way to connect more deeply with yourself and the world around you.

Over the 4-week introductory course, we'll explore:

✨ Namaskar — the traditional salutation that opens and closes each class, and the deeper meaning it holds within the dance tradition

✨ The foundational Odissi postures of Chauka and Tribhangi, developing balance, strength, grace, and body awareness

✨ Hasta Mudras — the rich language of hand gestures used to communicate stories, emotions, and ideas

✨ Rhythmic footwork and movement patterns that give Odissi its distinctive beauty and character

Along the way, you'll also experience the joy of moving to music, learning an ancient artistic tradition, and discovering a new way of expressing yourself.

Whether you're completely new to dance or looking to reconnect with movement, this course offers a supportive introduction to one of India's oldest classical dance forms.

Abhinaya is the art of bringing stories to life through expression.

In this beautiful Ashtapadi, the Sakhī (Radha's friend) gently encourages her to let go of her sorrow. She tells Radha to adorn herself in her finest jewellery, arrange her hair beautifully, and stop weeping, because Krishna is waiting for her.

It's a tender moment of friendship, compassion, and loving persuasion. Through subtle facial expressions, eye movements, gestures, and emotion, these beautiful Sanskrit verses come to life in movement.

Learn more about abhinaya in the 4-week Beginner Odissi Dance Course on the Sunshine Coast. Alongside foundational postures, rhythmic footwork, and mudras, you'll also be introduced to the expressive language of abhinaya ✨️

✨ Starts July 19, 10-11:30am (4 consecutive Sundays)

Odissi dance is more than just learning steps and dances.

Theory is an essential part of the journey, helping dancers understand not just what to do, but why we do it.

In theory lessons, students learn to write and understand rhythm, developing the ability to recognise and record different rhythmic patterns. This deepens musical awareness and creates a stronger connection between movement and music.

We also explore the language of the body, understanding the different types of movements, their purpose, and how they come together to create the distinctive beauty of Odissi dance and the subtle art of expression, abhinaya.

Through codified facial expressions, eye movements, hand gestures, and emotional states, dancers learn how to transform movement into storytelling. Abhinaya is what allows a dance to speak directly to the heart.

Theory brings the dance to life inside the mind of the dancer. It enriches practice, builds confidence, and helps us understand this rich tradition that has been passed down through generations.

If you've been curious about Odissi dance, my 4-week Beginner Odissi Dance Course begins Saturday, July 19 on the Sunshine Coast, we'll explore not only the movements of this beautiful dance form but also its rhythms, expressive storytelling, and the theory behind the practice.

No previous dance experience is needed.
