A couple of questions we regularly see on our page are, what do you need to fish for Tilapia and what bait is the best?
Tilapia fishing is surprisingly simply. Light gear such as 2-4kg rod and reel combo will get you started. The Daiwa Australia Luxel 2500 combo is one we have used and continue to use with great success. For your rig, a small hook (6-8) and a small sinker (000) is as basic as you need. The addition of a coloured bead can enhance visibility when sight casting or enticing aggressive Tilapia and if you’re fishing in an area with weeds, consider adding a small float to keep the bait off the bottom.
Worms are our most successful bait and can be garden earthworms, compost worms or Australian Worm Farms European and African Nightcrawlers. Bread and corn are also worth a try. The Bait Shop in Arundel stocks Nightcrawler worms for our Gold Coast anglers.
For the more experienced anglers, a small light blade, micro lure or small soft plastic can also be effective. Paul and the team at The Bait Shop Gold Coast can help you out.
For those experienced anglers amongst the group, feel free to share what you use and help set up new anglers for success.
