Hey guys, long time no post. π¬
I was very much retired (from dog training) for years, But now, I'm dipping my toe back in the business BECAUSE I recently found out there is a person claiming to be a dog trainer here on the Gold Coast (actually claiming to be the #1 "dog trainer?"π) and it looks like he primarily recommends the use of shock collars in the most inhumane way I've ever heard. I learned of this "trainer" when I noticed a shock collar on a dog at the park and I asked why does the dog has that on, they said their dog is leash reactive (barks, gets anxious and or pulls on lead when seeing another dog), and this "trainer" told them while in the house (and I'm using most of the owners words, minus any identity words) "The trainer explained in order to bring the dogs stress levels down, while in the house is to shock the dog for watching their every move, shock them if the dog watches them get up from the couch, shock them if the dog comes into their personal space, and shock them if the dog lays in an area that was out of bounds and shock them if they stared at them/or was anticipating their every move. and on walks, shock them if their ears went up, and if the dog panted or looked at another dog."
People! if a trainer tells you to use a shock collar in this manner, or anything remotely close, call RSPCA and notify them of this person is promoting animal abuse. the worst part is this trainer actually has people believing this in the only way to fix the majority of their dog problems, when this advice in almost all cases will only make the dogs behaviours worse, (Like in this case) Luckily this dog person hired me for a lesson and took that collar off immediately!
Anyway, this is a main reason I need to make myself known (again) to teach dog owners actual Science based training techniques that don't involve unnecessary animal abuse.
Thanks for listening to my rant

Great dog work π
From my highly knowledgeable veterinarian friend Lisa Newel from Malibu Animal Hospital, on why βgrain-freeβ food is bad for puppies/dogs
This will be my last PSA of the year. To all the pet stores and pet food companies out there, shame on you for shoving those designer grain-free diets down my clients and other uneducated people's throats!!! You know this trend all started happening when humans started having problems with gluten and needed gluten-free diets. This does not translate into dogs and truly only about 1% or less of dogs have grain allergies. This is a scientific fact. So why do we need grain in our dog's foods? Well, besides the obvious, grains are carbohydrates and we need those for energy and especially growth. I about die inside when people tell me they put their puppies on a grain-free diet because that's what the breeder said. At that point I always ask, well what vet school did your breeder go to? Anyway I digress. Most importantly, we need those grains for heart health. In 2018, The FDA actually became involved because we saw a terrible trend in DCM, dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs, especially golden retrievers. And guess what they found? It was all related to these grain-free diets. People were actually killing their own dogs because of these foods. So why are they still out there? Why are we still being brainwashed? Not quite sure but I really want to do something about it in the new year. No more grain-free diets, unless your dog has been told by your veterinarian, your dog is allergic to grains! Happy New Year, thank you for allowing me to rant and hopefully do some good. Peace and love and a brilliant 2024.
