On my first night at Scouts, I took one look around the room and was sure I didn’t belong.

Everywhere I looked there were big, confident boys in neatly pressed shirts, covered in badges and awards. And then there was me. A tiny, skinny sq**rt who somehow felt even smaller than he looked.

Every part of me wanted to shrink into the corner. These lads clearly had it all figured out, and I clearly didn’t.

Then the scoutmaster set the whole troop a challenge. Cook a sausage using a single match.

Every one of us got the same match. The badges didn’t help anyone, and neither did the pressed shirts. It came down to who was willing to get stuck in and have a go. I loved it. Something in me came alive that night, and I was hooked.

I only understood this years later. What I lacked in size and confidence, I slowly made up for with guts and a refusal to quit. And in the end that mattered far more than looking the part on day one.

Life puts us in rooms like that all the time. A new job, or a group of people who all seem to know exactly what they’re doing. We size everyone up, decide we’re the smallest one there, and start shrinking before anything has even begun.

Most of those people are just as unsure as we are. Some of them have just learned to hide it better.

It’s worth remembering when we’re the ones setting the challenge too, whether that’s running a team or organising a weekend away with mates. Give everyone the same shot, and don’t decide in advance who’s going to shine. The quiet one in the corner might surprise you all.

Where have you shrunk back because you didn’t think you looked the part? And who around you could do with a fair shot?

Besides the typical camping, hiking and other outdoor activities that Scouting offers, there are many other opportunities within Scouting. The post below is just one of the many different facets of Scouting.

“Hey, my name is Ryan, and I’m one of Scouts SA’s Youth Commissioners!

I’m incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to spend the next week at the World Scouting headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, helping support JOTA-JOTI and hosting two of its live shows!

Throughout the week, I’ll be collaborating and communicating with Scouts from all over the world, helping make this incredible event a success.

Being a Youth Commissioner has really pushed me to try new things and look where it’s taken me!

Make sure to tune into the live shows at 10:30 pm Adelaide time on Friday, October 16 and Sunday, October 18!”

It's the end of the week and you've just realized that you are needing the Staff lunch catered for?

Or you are needing food post the work team building activity?

Alternatively, you just need to get out of the work space and grab some lunch cooked by someone other than the packed lunch sent by your loving family member for the 5th day this week?

Never fear!

Get down to Bunnings Warehouse Australia - Parafield store, where Golden Grove Scout Group has all your food needs covered.

Get all your sausages in bread (with or without onions - we don't judge!) cooked by our awesome volunteers!

We even have soft drinks on sale as a side to the sausages. It's all about a balanced diet!

While Girl Scouts is USA based, this demonstrates that no matter the age of the Scout, they have the capacity to respond and to help out in some way.

If anyone is interested in supporting local youth theatre via Scouts Shouts Youth Theatre, there are some tickets still available for Saturday Night.

Held at Golden Grove Arts Centre, is truly a local production and includes youth members from our Venturer section.

This is a really good summary of why our leaders do what they do.

When we are asking and encouraging parents and other adults to join us, it's because we believe in what we do.

We also know that you would get just as much out of it as a adult as the youth themselves do.

🌲 Trees from 5ft+
💰 Starting around $100
📍 Pick up in Angle Vale
📅 Late November
🎄 Tree stands can also be organised

Before we lock it in, we’d love to know if there’s enough local interest.

👉 Would you buy a fresh Christmas tree from us?

Drop a YES 🎄 in the comments (and let us know what size you’d be after!).

No commitment at this stage — we’re just getting an idea of numbers.

Woodhouse Adventure Park could do with some votes.

Woodhouse Adventure Park has been a Scouts SA owned property since 1957, and holds many special memories for a lot of people.

We are sure they would appreciate people's votes. Details below.

Scouts SA, we’d love your vote! ⚜️🌟

Woodhouse Adventure Park is a finalist in the 2026 South Australian Tourism Awards, and we’re also up for the SA Life People’s Choice Award.

Woodhouse has been part of Scouts SA since 1957, so we know plenty of you have your own Woodhouse stories - from group camps to Cohen’s Cup, Cuboree and Jameborees, training weekends, school holiday adventures, Challenge Hill, campfires and plenty more.

Most recently, more than 2,000 people joined us for Flameboree, making it one of our biggest Scout weekends of the year.

So, if you’ve camped, climbed, explored or adventured at Woodhouse, we’d love your vote!

👉 Vote for Woodhouse Adventure Park in the ACCOMMODATION category in the SA Life People’s Choice Awards.
