HAWK LANDS SOME SILK
AFTER four days of negotiation and hours of official mediation a complicated deal involving four clubs, a shuffling of multiple draft picks and the last-minute involvement of Geelong will finally deliver Shaun Burgoyne to Hawthorn next year.
Burgoyne will join the Hawks as part of a complicated AFL swap also involving the move of Hawthorn premiership forward Mark Williams to Essendon.
The Power receive two first-round draft picks, the Hawks' number nine and number 16 from the Bombers, as well as 23-year-old Essendon on-baller Jay Nash.
In an unrelated deal, Hawthorn has also traded Josh Kennedy and Ben McGlynn to Sydney for picks 39, 46 and 70.
"Shaun is a quality player of outstanding character and we welcome him to our club," Hawthorn player manager Chris Pelchen said in a statement.
"He offers us a another highly talented option in our midfield and we look forward to seeing him in the brown and gold next year."
Port Adelaide football operations manager Peter Rohde says his club is pleased to have completed the trade.
"We wish Shaun all the best at Hawthorn," Rohde said.
"This leaves us with picks eight, nine and 16 in the National Draft, which is a terrific position.
"We are also delighted to have secured Jay Nash from Essendon.
"We have had our eye on Jay since he was drafted and really rate him as a half-back or on-baller."
The Power and Hawks took the rare step of entering mediation to broker the deal after their relationship became frosty following a thwarted attempt to resolve a trade on Wednesday.
Port had wanted Hawthorn defender Campbell Brown included along with the number nine pick.
But, after Brown was reluctant to move, Hawks president Jeff Kennett ruined any chance of that trade going ahead when he went on radio to stridently deny Brown had ever been offered up.
That left an angry Power unsure where to turn next and saying the "goalposts have moved".
But the decision to enter mediation created the breakthrough the two clubs needed to ensure Burgoyne is granted his wish to join the 2008 premiers.
Williams received an offer from the Bombers during Trade Week and the Hawks said they were happy to let the forward go.
"Williams had a contract with Hawthorn for the 2010 season but received an offer for three-years from Essendon and requested to be traded," said Pelchen.
"We were able to use that request to satisfy the trade of Shaun to Hawthorn, so it is mutually beneficial that Mark has found a new home and that the Hawks have been able to add such a quality player to our squad."

When he came across, we had doubts about whether he could do the stuff that he used to be able to do … everyone was saying that his knees were shot and that's why Port didn't give him a long-term deal. They thought he couldn't recover from his knee issues," Hodge said.
"Clarko's message to us was that he wasn't going to ask him to go and be the best midfielder in the League, but we would be asking him to pinch-hit. We had a lot of strong personalities and a lot of strong players going through there, that's why we were able to be successful in 2008.
"But he was another piece of the jigsaw. He could play half-back, he could play half-forward, we always had Shaun Burgoyne sitting across one of the lines. If you needed to throw him in the middle, you did. If you needed a goal, you put him forward."
