Weak glutes can affect far more than your strength in the gym.

Your glutes play a major role in sprinting, jumping, deceleration and change of direction. They help produce force and control the position of your hips, knees and pelvis as you move.

These 3 mini band exercises are a simple way to work on glute strength and control.

But remember, activating your glutes isn’t the same as actually strengthening them. Your program should progressively challenge them to produce and control force.

We asked our Phoenix coaches:

“What’s a sign that an athlete is genuinely progressing in the gym?”

And this is what they said…

Progress isn’t always about lifting more weight.

It can be better movement quality. More control. Better technique. Understanding their body. Moving with more confidence. Or being able to perform something that they couldn’t a few weeks ago.

The best progress is often seen in the things that happen between the numbers.

At Phoenix, we’re not interested in simply getting athletes tired.

Every session has a purpose, whether that’s building strength, improving movement, developing speed or addressing something specific to the athlete.

We look at where each athlete is now, what they need to improve, and what will actually help them perform better in their sport.

That’s athlete development.

Your knees take a huge amount of force when you sprint, jump, land and change direction, so building knee strength isn’t just about injury prevention.

Strong, well controlled knees allow athletes to produce force, absorb force and stay stable when the demands of their sport increase.

Especially in movements like deceleration and change of direction, your knee needs to be able to handle force while staying in a strong position.

These 3 exercises are a great way to build that strength and control.

Stronger knees = a stronger foundation for athletic movement.

Want to get faster? Don’t just train your sprinting.

Two areas we often focus on are your lower back and ankle strength.

Your ankle needs to be able to handle and return force efficiently when your foot hits the ground. Your lower back also plays an important role in maintaining your position and transferring force through your body.

The stronger and more controlled you are through these areas, the more effectively you can put force into the ground.

And ultimately, speed comes down to how well you can apply force.

Athletes are often told to stretch their hip flexors when they feel tight, but strength and control through the hips are just as important.

Your hip flexors help drive the knee, contribute to sprinting mechanics and help control your pelvis and leg as you move. If they’re weak, you can lose force and control through movements like sprinting, running and changing direction.

These 3 exercises are a great way to start building that strength and control.

The goal isn’t just to have flexible hips, it’s to have strong, controlled hips that can produce and absorb force when you need them.
