Social Bowls
On Wednesday we had a Mixed Fours semi-final plus 8 games of Triples and winners were decided by Lucky Rinks. First place went to Olwyn Mayer, Andy Thompson and Greg Riley (skip) who led 10 to 7 after 11 ends before losing the lead until they got back to all square, 14 all, on end 19 then picked up 2 shots on the last end to take their match 16 to 14 against Pat Barklem, Andrew Thomas and Lou Thomas (skip). Jock Commins, Ray Gale and Greg Maloney (skip) led 12 to 6 after 10 ends and increased the tempo to win their game 22 to 11 against Keith Pickett, Cindy Newell and Terry Lewis (skip).
On Saturday we had a good turnout for our Pairs Day. Winners, decided by Lucky Rink, were Jim Constan and Peter Jones (skip) who were in fine form to lead all the way for a 33 to 9 win against Darrel Goodridge and Mick Cavic (skip).
On Sunday we had 2 rinks of Triples. Winners, decided by Highest Winning Score, were Jan Rankin, Christine Cockerell and Pat Barklem (skip) who raced out to a 12 to 3 lead after 7 ends and maintained that momentum for a 22 to 9 win against Peter Hawker, Olwyn Mayer and Ross Richardson (skip). Amanda Simpson, Rob Simpson and Jan/Bruce Rapkins (skip) were all playing top bowls as they led 11 to 4 after 9 ends and continued that form for a 20 to 10 win against Enid Brooker, Aurelia Robinson and Peter Tinson (skip). We welcomed a new bowler today, Jan Rankin came along and enjoyed a great afternoon, the first of many we hope, Jan.
Mixed Fours
In the Final of the Mixed Fours Russell Burke, Cindy Newell, Keith Pickett and Ray Gale (skip) played Sue Sansom, Kaye Whiffen, Warren Bender and John Downie (skip) and in a tight first half Ray and his team led 8 to 5 after 9 ends and 10 to 9 after 12 ends. They picked up a 5 on end 13 to move out to a 15 to 9 lead. John and his, Sunday Bowlers team, tried valiantly but couldn’t make up the deficit, squaring the remaining ends as Ray and his team went on for a good 18 to 12 win. Congratulations to Russell, Cindy, Keith and Ray on winning the match to become the Club Mixed Fours Champions, well done.
Open Major Singles Championship
There were 3 matches played on Sunday. Mick Cavic played Peter Hiscox and Mick was on song early to lead 18 to 5 after 13 ends. In the second half Peter picked up the next 4 ends but Mick kept his form to keep any losses to a single shot. The remaining ends were very close and Mick moved out again to win the match 25 to 12. Mark Bartrop played Peter Dillon and Bart started well to set up a 15 to 4 margin after 13 ends. Peter came back, winning 5 of the next 6 ends, to trail 14 to 16 but then Bart stepped up to take the next 3 ends to extend his lead to 23 to 14. Bart then sealed the match, 25 to 18, after 26 ends. Peter Murton played Jock Commins and this was an epic match where Peter led early until the match was squared 9 all, after 12 ends. Jock took the lead, 12 to 10 after 14 ends and kept a narrow lead until the match was all square at 20 all after 25 ends. Jock moved out to a 23 to 21 lead after 27 ends but Peter came back and took the next 3 thrilling ends to take the match 25 to 23.
