One rule I give everyone: if it doesn’t look like what it’s meant to be, don’t eat it. Swipe for examples.
A steak looks like a steak. An apple looks like an apple. An egg looks like an egg. If you can’t tell what something started as, that’s your cue to look closer.
A meat pie isn’t a steak. A sausage isn’t a pork chop or a beef steak. Nuggets aren’t chicken breast, fish fingers aren’t a fish fillet, and devon isn’t roast beef. By the time they reach you, they’ve been ground, mixed, shaped and seasoned into something else.
It’s not just meat. Chips aren’t a potato, fruit straps and juice aren’t a piece of fruit, and a muesli bar isn’t a handful of oats, nuts and fruit. Same goes for flavoured yoghurt cups and kids’ cereal.
Can I picture where it came from? Could I make it in my own kitchen? Is the ingredient list short, and do I know every word? Three questions, about three seconds.
A pie at the footy won’t ruin you. Building your week on pies will. Whole foods most of the time bring protein, fibre and micronutrients with them, without the extra sugar, salt and refined oils.
