We're absolutely thrilled when our travel group just can't stop raving about their incredible diving experiences and the breathtaking sites they've explored. This bunch of enthusiasts is obsessed with tracking down nudibranchs and tiny sea creatures, but they're equally stoked when they spot sharks.

Another epic day on Gili Air with our divers on the Scuba Obsession dive trip.

The atmosphere on Gili Air is incredibly calming. Despite being unable to dive due to congestion, I have been basking in the sunshine, breathing in the fresh air, and absorbing the unique charm of Gili Air.

Nothing adds to a dive holiday even more when you count the staff as friends.

To someone standing on the shore, it can seem unnecessary. The sun is shining, the sea looks calm, and visibility appears good. So why are experienced divers checking wind forecasts, swell predictions, tide charts, and weather apps before every dive?
The answer is simple. What you see on the surface is only part of the story.

Weather has a huge influence on underwater conditions. Wind creates waves that affect entries and exits. Swell can produce surge that moves divers back and forth, even on the bottom. Tides generate currents that can turn an easy dive into a challenging one, while rain and wave action can dramatically reduce underwater visibility.

The more experience divers gain, the more they realise that a safe dive often depends on the decisions made before anyone enters the water.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲'𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞?
One of the biggest mistakes inexperienced divers make is judging conditions only by what they see when they arrive. Experienced divers know they're looking at what the weather has been, not necessarily what it's about to become.

A calm morning can quickly become rough if the wind is forecast to increase. Large ocean swells generated hundreds of kilometres away can arrive at the dive site even when the local weather is perfect. Likewise, strong winds over the previous few days may have stirred up sand and sediment, reducing visibility long after the wind has eased.

Tides are equally important. Some dive sites are best explored during slack water, when currents are at their weakest. Arriving at the wrong stage of the tide can mean stronger currents, reduced visibility, and a far more demanding dive.
Good planning makes better diving

Experienced divers don't check the weather because they're worried about getting wet. They do it because they understand that conditions influence almost every part of the dive, from choosing the right site to selecting the right equipment and deciding whether it's worth diving at all.

Sometimes the safest decision is simply to choose a different dive site or postpone the dive until conditions improve.

𝐈𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭:
Experienced divers spend time checking the weather because wind, swell, tides, and currents all have a major impact on what happens underwater. The safest dives rarely happen by chance. They begin with careful planning, good judgement, and understanding that the conditions on the surface are only part of the story.

When it starts with one, you add another, and then a whole bunch........this is what we love about our dive community!
