Audition season always hits hard 😂

The studio has battened down the hatches and is weathering the September/October university and conservatorium audition season with our singers.

Please send good vibes, wishes for no colds and plenty of rest once we’re finished this season. 🍀

And toi, toi, toi to all of the studio’s singers who are auditioning this season. You will sing beautifully 💙

This is such an important question - and it tends to be one of the first questions I ask new clients! 🙋‍♀️

It is imperative to know how you are caring for your voice as well as to start discussing the demands that are placed on your voice so that we can best support it in the studio through a holistic and personalized approach.

And no dramas if the answer is… ‘I don’t have one!’ That’s why we are here - and we’ll help you get started in the studio! 👏💙

📸 Check out some sneak peaks of the new studio at 3/141 Broadway, Nedlands! 📸

We’re busy moving in this week, and then we’ll be decorating as we go along as we get used to our new space!

So looking forward to welcoming back the studio’s clients next week as we settle into this fabulous new space. Moving is always a mission, but it’s worth it for this space!

See you on Broadway! 🎭

Time and time again, the voice users I support repeat the phrase: ‘I need to breathe with my diaphragm’.

But when I ask them to explain what that means and how it relates to their breathing, they can’t. 🤨

So, it’s time to debunk some myths! 🕵️

The diaphragm is an INVOLUNTARY muscle, meaning you cannot move it independently by thought and will.

When you breathe in or inhale, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward (it flattens) when you fill your lungs with air. Its job is to displace your guts and viscera (your abdominal contents) so that you can fully inflate the bottom section of your lungs.

When you decide to exhale, the diaphragm relaxes and moves back up to its original dome shape. Your abdominal contents also return to their original space (so your tummy doesn’t stick out anymore). This helps to force the air out of your lungs.

So as a voice specialist, what I’m interested in with my clients is not their diaphragm but, instead, their ability to take a deep diaphragmatic breath.

This is the trigger, the diaphragm will do its job all on its own - it’s an INVOLUNTARY muscle after all! ✅
