The popularity of football in the Great Southern was on show again recently with the 2026 Belt Up Regional Festival of Football. This was the ninth annual week-long festival and one of the best yet, with great support for all the activations in and around Albany.

Approximately 2,000 people attended the free events, including up to 1,250 spectators who watched the New Balance NPL WA double-header at Retravision Stadium throughout the day.

Great Southern Community Participation Officer Ches Leonard said: “The event was very well received locally, with universal positive feedback provided from the Great Southern football community. We appreciate the effort from everyone from the region who got involved, including the clubs and their volunteers."

Football West thanks the Insurance Commission of Western Australia as the naming rights partner of the Regional Festival of Football through its Belt Up road safety campaign. We also acknowledge the WA Government for its ongoing support for the event.

Also, thanks to the Great Southern Soccer Association and the Albany Junior Soccer Association in making the event a success.

The best of regional football was on show on the weekend as players, coaches, officials and families came together for the 2026 North West Championships.

This year’s event took place in the Pilbara town of Tom Price and showcased the strength, passion and continued growth of football throughout regional Western Australia.

Football West General Manager – Football David Lewis said: “Congratulations to Tom Price Soccer Club - TPSC, who were exceptional hosts. This was the first time they had held the North West Championships and they exceeded expectations with a professionally delivered event that set a new benchmark for future tournaments."

Football West thanks Fortescue Metals Group and the Shire of Ashburton for their great backing for this year’s championships. We also want to acknowledge the WA Government’s ongoing support for our regional programs.

West Australian football has lost a true great of our game with the death of Ron Adair.

Born in 1931 in Northern Ireland, Ron moved to WA at the age of 18 and went on to become the first West Aussie to captain Australia. In all he played 13 times for his new country after making his debut in a 5-0 win against China in Adelaide in 1955.

Ron first played for the State within a year of his arrival, going on to represent WA in 23 matches including 11 as captain.

A defender with the nickname ‘Iron Man’, Ron also possessed a prodigious leap. He put that combination to good use for over a decade, winning two league titles.

More impressively, he was named the league’s best player for three successive seasons – and with three different clubs. He received his first Ledger Medal in 1953 with North Perth; a year later when at Maccabeans; then he completed his hat-trick in 1955 while playing for Azzurri.

Football West CEO Jamie Harnwell said: “Ron’s name was revered by everyone who watched football in WA in the post-War era and that he is still held in such esteem some 70 years later shows the impact that he had on our game.”
