It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of former Subiaco Football Club player, Richard “Dick” Manning. A valued member of our club and a proud Lion, Dick will be fondly remembered by all who knew him, from teammates to supporters.
Dick represented the Subiaco Football Club from 1971 to 1976, playing a total of 49 league games and winning a premiership in 1973. His speed and skill on the wing were a key part of our side in the early 1970s, including being part of the club’s proud football history.
Off the field, Richard’s contribution to football and the broader community was equally respected, with his leadership continuing beyond his playing days, including roles with local clubs such as President of Willetton Football Club.
1973 Premiership Captain Coach Ross Smith, reflected on Richard's impact with the club.
"When I arrived at Subiaco in the pre season of 1973, I could see that Dick was a player who tried to play, at all times, to the best of his ability.
He played in most of the games in 1973 and was a valued member of our team which won the Premiership. He ‘bought’ in to the game style in that year that valued players who worked hard to win the ball but just as hard to get it back after we had lost possession. The latter involved playing on an opponent and as coach, I valued Dick’s defensive mind set when we did not have the ball.
Dick’s work ethic, his ball contest and running ability made him a strong contributor to our success that year. He was a valued team member both on and off the field.
Since our playing days, Dick was keen to keep in contact with his former teammates and often came to Melbourne around the Boxing Day test. He was the catalyst for the eastern based former Subiaco players to meet for lunch with Mike Fitzpatrick, David Parkin, Gary Crouch, Chris O’Farrell, Garry Buckannara and fitness advisor, John Harmer. On one occasion, Brian Sierakowski joined us for lunch.
This connection continued when Dick relocated to the Caribbean and we received his regular and interesting reports on his volunteer activities in his adopted community.
Recently, he was proposing that Subiaco might consider bringing forward the next ’73 Premiership Reunion to 2028, our 55th anniversary, rather that wait until 2033 for the 60th anniversary just in case we lose more Premiership players. How right he was as Dick now joins Pedro and Ocker who will be absent in either 2028 and 2033.
We salute and thank them all for their contribution to our team and club success."
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Dick’s family, friends, and all who were touched by his passion for the game. He will be dearly missed, but always remembered as a true Lion.
Rest in peace, Richard. 🕊️
