Tasmanian hockey has always been a caring, supportive, and closely-bonded community. It makes it all the more difficult when we hear about the passing of someone who was so widely and deeply loved, as Wally Atkins was.

Originally from Launceston, Wally was a friendly face to people from all over the state as he moved to Hobart in 2009 to open the Just Hockey shop at the Hockey Centre. He put his community first, with his energy and enthusiasm always at the forefront of his interactions. The Shotstoppers Tasmania group wrote a lovely tribute to his character, and they said it best - "He had a way of making everyone feel a part of something bigger - a team, a family, a home."

Wally loved every aspect of hockey, playing for TAS in Masters tournaments and the Wombats (Canterbury), as well as coaching for St. Patrick's College and Launceston City Hockey Club. He umpired both in Launceston and Hobart, was the president of the Launceston City Hockey Club and Northern Hockey Association, and was a groundsman at the Northern Hockey Centre for a time.

He touched so many hearts and impacted so many lives for the better. We are so thankful to have had Wally as an integral part of the Tasmanian hockey community, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. He left behind a legacy of kindness and joy, and will be deeply missed.

Wally Atkins' Celebration of Life will be held at the Tasmanian Hockey Centre in New Town on Friday, February 14th from 4:30pm. His family has invited all who would like to attend, and only ask that shorts be worn in honour of his memory (even in the middle of winter, he never wore trousers, ever). We hope you'll join us in honouring the his memory.
