What are the best questions to ask if you're offered induction of labour?

As a midwife who has researched and written about induction of labour for more than two decades, I get asked that quite a bit.

Especially as I have a fundamental belief that there is no one 'right' path for everyone.

Twenty years before anyone hashtagged , I was promoting that very idea to women and families.

One size doesn't fit all.

You need to decide what's right for you.

And in order to do that, you might need to ask some questions.

So I have put together this guide to the five best questions that you can ask in order to get more information and make the decisions that are right for you.

I'm also going to tell you what can you learn from the answers you are given.

You can find my blog post at https://www.sarawickham.com/articles-2/five-questions-to-ask-if-youre-offered-induction-of-labour/

There's a link to my website in my insta bio as well.

I hope you'll find it useful.

A step by step guide to using a TENS machine during labour:

โœ…Check the machine is turned off before placing the pads on your back. Itโ€™s best to have another person such as your birth partner place the pads on your back for you.
โœ…Place two of the electrode pads on either side of your spine, with the tops of the pads at about bra-strap level.
โœ…Place the other two lower down, from just below your panty line up.
โœ…Switch the machine on, starting with the controls at the lowest setting.
โœ…Turn them up gradually as your contractions get stronger, or when the pain in your back gets worse.
โœ…Press the boost button during contractions. The boost function results in more intense, wave-like tingling or buzzing sensations.
โœ…Remember to turn off the boost button again when the contraction has ended. This is so you feel the benefit of the boost next time you have a contraction.
โœ…Keep mobile. Moving around during labour helps you to feel in control and will make TENS more effective.
โœ…Donโ€™t give up straight away if you think TENS isnโ€™t doing anything. You may need to keep using it for at least an hour before it starts to work for you.
โœ…If the pads start to lose their stickiness, rub a few drops of water into the gel side of the pads before putting them back on. The more firmly the pads are stuck on, the better theyโ€™ll work.
โœ…If you donโ€™t think the pads are helping you after a while, take them off. You are in control of your labour and what is working for you. All other forms of pain relief, both medical and non-medical, are still open to you.

Did you know the female pelvis is designed to carry the weight of both mama and baby. It is the bony cradle that holds and rocks the baby whilst they develop in the womb.โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
It connects the vertebrae and the lower limbs and protects the reproductive organs, bladder, intestines and re**um. It also provides attachment for the abdominal muscles of the pelvic floor. โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €

It is surrounded by soft tissue that pads and cradles like a next for the baby. The soft tissue also helps with the rotation of the baby's head as it descends through the public outlet during birth.โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
