Clarifying Track Certification and Event Sanctioning ๐โโ๏ธ๐๏ธ
To dispel any misinformation, the track oval in Agusan del Sur holds a World Athletics facility certification, confirming it meets all international technical and construction standards. Reports labeling the facility as "substandard" are inaccurate.
However, it is important to distinguish this from the sanctioning of a competition. For an event to be valid for official World Athletics rankings, records, and elite qualification standards, it must be formally sanctioned by the National Sports Authority (NSA), which in the Philippines is the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA).
The 2026 Palarong Pambansa is a Department of Education (DepEd) scholastic event. As such, it operates under its own internal rules and competition policies rather than being a PATAFA-sanctioned meet. Therefore, performance times recorded at the Palarong Pambansa are not recognized as official national records or qualifying times for international World Athletics rankings, regardless of the facilityโs certification status.

Protecting Athlete Integrity: A Proposal for National Championship Registration Reform ๐โโ๏ธ๐ต๐ญ
The current situation surrounding team registrations for the national championships has become a significant concern for the athletic community.
Too many athletes are being misled by individuals promising team representation, only to be met with silence and disappointment as deadlines approach. This lack of transparency not only stifles the integrity of our sport but cruelly shatters the dreams of athletes who rely on these teams for support, funding, and the opportunity to compete. ๐
To address this instability and protect our athletes from "empty promise" scenarios, we propose a shift in how teams are managed and registered with PATAFA. ๐
Proposed Registration Reform ๐ก
To ensure financial stability and accountability, we suggest the following structural changes:
Mandatory Pre-Registration: Teams must nominate and pay a non-refundable 10,000 PHP registration fee to PATAFA at least 3 months prior to the national championships.
Eligibility Threshold: Any team that has not paid this fee by the deadline will be deemed ineligible to compete, preventing last-minute logistical failures.
Public Verification List: PATAFA should publish an official, verified list of eligible teams on their website and page, including official contact information.
Centralized Accountability: This model moves away from ad-hoc individual registration toward a system where athletes can confidently choose teams that have the confirmed infrastructure and financial backing to actually get them to the starting line. ๐
Why This Matters ๐ก๏ธ
Currently, many athletes are left "shopping around" for teams, only to hit a brick wall when those teams fail to materialize. Furthermore, with many university programs unable to cover the high costs of national participation, having a curated list of financially stable, vetted teams is essential. By securing a lump sum up-front, PATAFA can better ensure that the teams competing are not just present in name, but fully capable of supporting their athletes' journey to the podium. ๐ฅ
It is time to prioritize the dreams of the athletes over the hollow promises of unverified organizers. Letโs bring clarity, stability, and integrity back to the national championships. ๐ค

The Crucial Divide: Palarong Pambansa Results vs. National Record Integrity ๐โโ๏ธ
Why doesnt DEPED just pay the 50k PATAFA sanction fee?
The recent Palarong Pambansa has showcased world-class facilities and the incredible dedication of thousands of student-athletes. As the games conclude, however, it remains vital to address the ongoing challenge of athletic data integrity in the Philippinesโspecifically the distinction between "Palaro records" and "National/National Junior records."
The Sanctioning Gap
A recurring issue in Philippine sports is the lack of formal sanctioning for DepEd-run events by the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA), the sole governing body recognized by World Athletics in the country.
While it is noted that these events are attended by PATAFA officials, the absence of formal PATAFA sanctioning is a critical distinction. Without this official authorization, none of the results achieved at these games can be officially considered for national rankings, international meet selections, or the ratification of national records.
While these performances are undoubtedly meaningful to the athletes and their regions, they exist in a technical vacuum outside of the national governing body's purview. Pinoy Athletics stands by PATAFA in not considering these results for any purpose beyond the scope of the Palaro itself.
A Way Forward: Investing in Validity
DepEd is, and should be, free to use these results for their own internal Palaro records, school rankings, and the awarding of medals. However, the current system creates confusion for athletes, coaches, and the public when "Palaro records" are conflated with "National records."
With the Department of Education currently handling a historic, record-breaking budget exceeding 1 trillion pesos, it is difficult to justify the failure to allocate the 30,000 to 50,000 pesos required for proper PATAFA event sanctioning. Given the scale of the department's financial resources, investing this relatively nominal amount is a necessary step to ensure that the hard work of our student-athletes is officially recognized and validated on the national and international stage.
Furthermore, the lack of public access to official results on the DepEd website complicates efforts to track development or verify achievements. For the sake of the student-athletes, it is time for the DepEd to bridge this gap by prioritizing transparency and investing in the proper PATAFA sanctioning of their athletic events. Until such steps are taken, these results must remain "non-bearing" outside of the Palarong Pambansa.

๐ Historic Milestone: Four Pinoy Athletes Bound for World Juniors! ๐
History has been made for Philippine athletics! We are thrilled to announce that Jeralyn "Tisay" Rodriguez has officially qualified for the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, this August 5โ9. ๐โโ๏ธ๐จ
Tisoy is the fourth athlete to secure a spot for the Philippines this year, joining an elite group of trailblazers: Ivan Cabanda (Boys' 400m Hurdles), Naomi Cesar (Girls' 800m), and Bhianca Espenilla (Girls' Javelin).
This is a monumental achievement. Before 2026, no local athlete had ever successfully hit the stringent qualifying standard for the World Junior Championships, and the previous record for the most Filipino athletes to qualify in a single edition was just two. Seeing four of our rising stars heading to the iconic Hayward Field represents a massive leap forward for our nation's track and field program. ๐ต๐ญ๐
Regarding her qualification: After a standout performance at the Asian Junior Finals, where she placed 8th, Tisay clocked a 54.83 in the 400m, comfortably dipping under the 55.20 qualifying standard.
While many fans remember her blistering 53.40 run at the 2025 SEA Gamesโa time that would have shattered the Philippine Junior Recordโthat performance was unfortunately invalidated.
Asian Athletics confirmed that a major malfunction with the Fully Automated Timing (FAT) and photo-finish system in Thailand affected that event. However, this setback only fueled Tisayโs resolve to prove her speed on the track, and now she is ready to shine on the world stage!
With the qualification window open until July 26, 2026, let's keep supporting our athletes as they chase their dreams and represent the Philippines with pride! ๐โจ
