Nobody is quite sure who first said that. It applies to a bad workplace anyway.
Because the hardest part of a toxic workplace is not the behaviour. It is the waiting. Waiting for someone to notice. Waiting for HR to act. Waiting for the restructure, the new manager, the moment it quietly sorts itself out.
I wrote a fortnight ago that toxic cultures resist change. They do. Which leaves a question that sounds bleak and is actually the opposite. If they are ๐ป๐ผ๐ going to change, what can I do?
Here is what I do not mean by that.
I do not mean hand in your notice. I do not mean a formal complaint, or a confrontation, or blowing up a career you have spent decades building.
I mean something that sounds smaller and turns out to be bigger. Taking action for yourself.
You cannot control how a difficult colleague behaves on a Tuesday. That is not yours and it never was. What you can change is how much of you it takes with it.
There is a line between the things you can do something about and the things you cannot, and almost all of the exhaustion comes from spending yourself on the wrong side of it.
That work is real, and it is more ordinary than it sounds.
Getting your sleep back.
Knowing what you will accept and what you will not, and saying so once, calmly.
Putting things in your week that have nothing to do with work, and protecting them.
Building enough steadiness that Sunday night stops belonging to Monday.
Finding your way back to a bit of peace. Then a bit of calm. Then, eventually, joy, which is usually the last one to return and the one you notice most.
None of that changes them. All of it changes what they cost you.
I spent a long time waiting for my own workplace to change. The day things actually shifted was not the day it improved. It was the day I stopped waiting and started working on the only part I could reach.
Workplace toxic? Take action. For yourself.
The first conversation is free. A full hour. No judgement, no pitch.
