That's a wrap on Dementia Action Week – and our final brain health tip: look after your overall health.

Managing blood pressure and cholesterol, looking after your hearing and vision, getting enough sleep, supporting your mental health, not smoking and staying within recommended alcohol limits all support long-term brain health. Regular health checks matter too – they help pick up changes early, when they're easiest to manage.

Move more, eat well, stay connected, keep learning and look after your overall health – small, consistent choices add up for both body and brain.

Brain health tip 4: keep your brain active.

Just like our bodies, our brains benefit from being challenged. Learning something new, reading, puzzles, music, gardening or a new hobby can all help keep the brain engaged.

It doesn't need to be complicated. Choose things you enjoy and are likely to stick with – and if you can learn alongside others, even better.

Brain health tip 3: stay socially connected.

Talking, listening, laughing and engaging with others matters for our health. Social isolation and loneliness have been linked to poorer physical, mental and cognitive health as we age.

A walking group, exercise class, volunteering or a regular catch-up with friends combines movement with connection – and both are good for the brain.

There's no single “brain food” that prevents dementia, but a healthy eating pattern supports both brain and heart health. Think plenty of vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, legumes, nuts, seeds, fish and healthy fats, with less of the highly processed stuff.

Mediterranean-style eating in particular has been linked to benefits for heart and brain health.

Small, sustainable changes count more than a perfect diet.

Brain health tip 1: keep moving.

Regular physical activity supports blood flow to the brain and helps manage conditions like high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes – all linked to dementia risk.

You don't need to run marathons. Walking, swimming, cycling, dancing or a class you enjoy all count, and getting outdoors adds another benefit – research links time in green (and blue) spaces to better cognitive wellbeing as we age.

Small increases in activity make a difference.

Dementia Action Week starts today (21–27 September).

Dementia isn't a normal part of ageing. While there's no guaranteed way to prevent it, research shows there's a lot we can do throughout life to help support our brain health – and much of it is simply good for our overall health too.

All week, we're sharing five simple places to start. First up tomorrow: keeping active.

When we think about healthy ageing, we often think about staying physically strong, mobile and independent. But looking after our brain is just as important. Dementia Action Week (21-27 September) is a timely reminder that dementia is not a normal part of ageing. While there is no guaranteed way to....
