Townsvilles Floating Hotel current Rest place.

The world’s first floating hotel opened in 1988 on Australia’s John Brewer Reef, a seven-storey ocean resort complete with restaurants, bars, a nightclub, and even a tennis court. It was an engineering marvel — a full luxury hotel anchored in the middle of the sea — but harsh weather, huge maintenance costs, and difficult logistics made it impossible to sustain.

The hotel was later sold to Vietnam, becoming the Saigon Floating Hotel on the Saigon River, before being relocated again to North Korea’s Mount Kumgang as the Hotel Haegumgang. It closed in 2008 and remained abandoned for years, a wandering relic of one of hospitality’s boldest experiments.

The old Hong Kong Restaurant of Uncle Frankie and Aunty Dot.

Opening in the 1950s, the Hong Kong Restaurant in Flinders Street was owned by the Chun Tie family. It was the first restaurant in Townsville to be air conditioned and to hold a liquor licence. Before the invention of take away containers, customers would bring in their own casserole dishes to take food home. Reputedly the best Chinese restaurant in Townsville, it was sold in 1974 to another local family.
