🫶💌🪧 Round 13 is Coach Appreciation Round, which means it’s time to raid the craft drawer!

On Monday 9th November and Saturday 14th November we would love to see our courts lined with thank you posters for our wonderful coaches.

Because coaching takes guts. Juggling training and court time with work, study and family commitments is hard. Juggling what is best for the team with what is best for each player is hard. Juggling your own expectations and emotions with those of your players (and their families) is hard.

But none of this goes unnoticed. Thank you, coaches for everything you do. On and off the court. You rock! 🫶🤩👏

📣 Following the success of our 3 v 3 mini game last Saturday, where we showcased how this exciting format works, we are pleased to announce that WNA will be hosting a 3 v 3 Mini Tournament on Saturday 31 October 2026.

We are looking forward to bringing everyone together for a fun, fast-paced and exciting day of netball!

Tournament Details:
* Date: Saturday, 31 October
* Venue: Sportlink
* Time Commencement: 9am
* Game format: 3 v 3 netball
* Game duration: 7 minutes per game, with a 5-minute break between games
* Team registration fee: $50 per team
* Registration deadline: Monday, 26 October
* Team size: A maximum of 6 players per team

Competition Divisions:
The tournament will feature five divisions:
* Female Under 16
* Female Under 19
* Female Open
* Mixed Under 18
* Mixed Open

We encourage clubs, teams and individual players to get involved and take advantage of this opportunity to experience a different style of netball.

Understanding the 3 v 3 Format:
The 3 v 3 format is a faster-paced version of traditional netball, with three players on court per team. One of the key differences is that players can score different point values depending on their position and shooting distance.

Positions and Movement:
Each team has three players on court:
* Centre (C): Can move anywhere except inside the goal circle and can shoot for 3 points.
* Wing (W): Can move anywhere except inside the goal circle and can shoot for 2 or 3 points.
* Goal (G): Can move anywhere on the court, including inside the goal circle, and can shoot for 1, 2 or 3 points.

Scoring System:
* 1 point: Close-range shot, available to the Goal player.
* 2 points: Mid-range shot (Super Shot).
* 3 points: Long-range shot (Triple Shot).

Basic Rules:
* Players have 5 seconds to pass the ball.
* Normal netball footwork rules apply; players cannot step with the ball.
* Defenders must remain at least 90 cm away from the player in possession.
* Excessive contact and unfair physical play are not permitted.
* Players must remain within their permitted playing areas.
* Any infringement results in a free pass to the opposing team.

Starting and Restarting Play:
* Rock, Paper, Scissors determines which team starts with possession.
* The Centre starts behind the transverse line and calls “GO” to commence play.
* Following a goal, the opposing team restarts play from the transverse line.
* After an intercept, rebound or defensive penalty, the ball must be taken back behind the transverse line before the team can attack again.

Game Format and Substitutions:
* Three players per team on court at any time.
* Up to three substitutes per team.
* Unlimited rolling substitutions are permitted from the team's designated reset corner.
* Games are played without half-time.

Please note that the game duration and break times listed in the tournament details above will apply to this event. The rules and format outlined here are intended to help teams familiarise themselves with the 3 v 3 style of play.

How to Register Your Team:
Team registrations are now open via Netball Connect. The registration fee is $50 per team, and all registrations must be completed by Monday, 26 October.

Super excited to share that our Over 40s Ladies Netball Competition was crowned 2026 Sport and Recreation Initiative of the Year at the Whitehorse Sports & Recreation Awards ceremony last night.

The nomination read “Kate identified a gap in sporting opportunities for women over 40 and successfully championed the creation of Whitehorse Netball Association’s Over 40s competition. Beginning with 7 to 8 teams and growing to 10 teams within its first year, the initiative promotes fun, fitness and friendship while reconnecting women with community sport. Her tireless promotion, recruitment and advocacy have built a strong, inclusive sporting community and inspired similar competitions elsewhere, creating lasting social and health benefits for participants.”

Humbled by the nomination, Kate would like to take this opportunity to send out a massive thank you to her teammates. 🥰🙏“Because none of this would have happened if they didn’t say yes to playing with me in the first place! I am also incredibly grateful to Liz, Carmel and the Whitehorse Netball Association for getting behind the idea and making Over 40s a reality every week. And to everyone who joins us on a Thursday night - thank you for being here. Hopefully you are having as much fun as I am!”

On behalf of WNA, we would also like to like to send out a huge congratulations to Yvonne Barrett from Surrey Hills Netball Club who was crowned Volunteer of the Year last night (and who is also a ‘Volunteer of the Year” finalist in the 2026 NV Community Awards 🤩) and Sam Benson from Whitehorse Colts Junior Football Netball Club who was named a Volunteer of the Year finalist.

Thank you for working so hard to make sure Whitehorse is a welcoming and supportive place for everyone to play and get involved in netball. 🫶🏐

We are thrilled to announce that Kate Blakeman has been nominated for Whitehorse Sport and Recreation Initiative of the Year. 👏🥰

“Initiatives are deliberate activities that achieve positive outcomes for the Whitehorse community through sport and recreation. They may encourage participation in a sport or activity to a person or persons who traditionally do not participate, support community members to connect with each other, raise awareness for important causes or promote healthy lifestyles for individuals.” - Whitehorse City Council.

Kate is not sure who nominated her or why she has been nominated, but suspects it may be for her involvement in bringing “Over 40s” netball to life at WNA. A personal passion project inspired by a lack of options for women, Kate jumped on social media to promote the idea which resulted in our Over 40s section launching with 10 teams in its very first season. For Kate, “Over 40s” has always been about breaking down barriers and creating a place where every woman, regardless of age, experience, ability or fitness feels comfortable to have a go. And to have a laugh.

The winner will be announced at the 2026 Whitehorse Sport and Recreation Awards Ceremony on Tuesday 13 October 2026.

Best of luck to Kate and to all her fellow nominees. Thank you for encouraging more people to get involved in local sport. 🫶🏐

With netball back next week 🥳 (and the pointy end of the season just around the corner) we want to hear you cheer loud. And respect louder. 👏🤩 From the sidelines to the court, the way we speak, act and support one another matters. Let’s show them how it’s done at WNA.
