Vugar Gashimov Award at Tata Steel Chess Tournament
Sarkhan Gashimov, the brother of Vugar Gashimov (who died at the age of 27 in 2014) attended the opening of the 12th round of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament this afternoon. Tournament director Jeroen van den Berg introduced him and announced that as of this year a new prize will be awarded, to honour the memory of Sarkhan’s late brother: the Vugar Gashimov Award. It’s a fair play prize, which will be awarded in both the Tata Steel Masters and the Tata Steel Challengers groups. That will take place during the award ceremony of the 78th edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament tomorrow evening. When Sarkhan stood on the podium after today’s games had begun, world champion Magnus Carlsen interrupted his game against Wesley So to shake hands with Sarkhan.
Vugar Gashimov was born in Baku (Azerbaijan) on 24 July 1986. He died of a brain tumour in Heidelberg on 10 January 2014, at the age of 27. At that moment he was the number 10 chess player in the world and very popular among his colleagues. The award jury will consider how the chess players have behaved towards their opponents, arbiters, press and the organisation of the tournament. Sarkhan Gashimov has selected the Tata Steel Chess Tournament for awarding the prize, since this is the last official tournament in which Vugar participated in 2012.
