🇧🇧🏐 NEXT STOP: NORCECA BEACH TOUR – JUAN DOLIO đŸ‡©đŸ‡Ž

Barbadian beach volleyball duo Cael Greenidge and Joshua Ashby are set to make their senior debut this weekend at the NORCECA Beach Tour stop in Juan Dolio Beach, Dominican Republic.

The venue holds special memories for the young pair, who just two months ago secured their qualification to the FIVB U18 Beach Volleyball World Championships on the same beach.

With a little over two weeks remaining before they take on the world's best at the U18 World Championships, this NORCECA event provides a valuable opportunity to test themselves against experienced senior competition and continue their development on the international stage.

The Bajan duo led by coach Mark Lewis, are in Pool A alongside host nation Dominican Republic, U.S. Virgin Islands, and St. Kitts & Nevis.

Best of luck to Cael and Joshua as they represent Barbados and gain experience ahead of their world championship campaign! đŸ‡§đŸ‡§đŸ”„

Harrison College girls as expected won their fifth consecutive under 16 volleyball title while Combermere won their first in nearly two decades when the C2A Sports finals climaxed yesterday at the Wildey Gymnasium.

However, although the matches ended in straight sets, the Kolij girls had to survive multiple sets points to deny the Christ Church Foundation School 30-28, 26-24.  MVP Cuzarah Batson along with six footer Jordyn Garner-Clarke survived an onslaught from Foundation’s Gabrielle Sandiford.

In the first set Foundation locked the scores from eight and actually held set point 26-25 before losing.  They recovered from 13-20 in the second with the smart serving and counter attacking from Sandiford taking Foundation to an unbelievable 24-22.  After HC took a timeout Sandiford shockingly went for a jump serve which went long and HC locked at 24 before wrapping up the contest in straight sets.

In the boys’ game Barbados player and MVP Joshua Ashby led a superior performance with teammates Art Thornhill, Jari Pile and Ky-Mani Sandiford taking the match over Deighton Griffith 25-13, 25-20.

Playing in their first ever schools’ volleyball final Deighton gave a gutsy display with Rojani Shurland-Agard, Mekhi Miller and pint size girl Trinity Nurse matching the fervor of their cheerleaders and supporters in the stands.

Shurland-Agard and Miller joined Ashby, Sandiford, Pile and Franklain Durant of HC as the six outstanding male players.  The females chosen were Batson, Garner-Clarke, Gabrielle Sandiford, Jazmyn Nurse and Rochelle Collymore of Lester Vaughan along Trinity Nurse of Deighton.

In the battles for third place Lester Vaughan won the girls’ defeating Queen’s College 25-18, 25-10 while in the boys’ HC overturned their preliminary match loss to the Alleyne School 25-23, 25-15.

The Deighton Griffith School made a historic advancement to the C2A Sports National Sports Council’s under 16 volleyball final when the semifinals were staged yesterday at the Wildey Gymnasium.

The Kingsland based school seized the opportunities provided by pint size Trinity Nurse playing as setter on the boys’ team with attackers Rojani Shurland-Agard, Morgan Holder-Briggs and Mekhi Miller dismissing Harrison College 25-18, 25-17.

First time finalists in any schools’ volleyball finals Deighton Griffith will face former champions Combermere next Monday.  With Barbados under 19 player Joshua Ashby spearheading their offense Combermere turned away the Alleyne School 25-19, 25-14.

The girls’ semifinals went the distance with four times defending champions Harrison College facing game and match point 13-14 before easing past the Lester Vaughan School 25-12, 20-25, 16-14.

Solid performances from Barbados youth player Cuzarah Batson and sixfooter, Jordyn Garner-Clarke for HC nullified the exciting counters from Rochelle Collymore and Jazmyn Nurse.

HC will face the Christ Church Foundation School in next week’s final after Barbados youth player Gabrielle Sandiford and Tiffany Layne piloted them past Queen’s College 25-18, 23-25, 15-10.

The defending under 16 girls’ volleyball champions Harrison College fully displayed their wrath of having to play in yesterday’s quarterfinals of the C2A Sports when the National Sports Council’s action took place at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Having lost a preliminary game to Queen’s College, HC suffered the indignity of missing out on the direct ticket to the semifinals for the first time in four years and having to battle through the quarterfinals’ round.

However, with a trio of Barbados youth player Cuzarah Batson, six footer Jordyn Garner-Clarke and Saran Walter-Belgrave the Kolij Lion mauled The Lodge School Griffins 25-5, 25-5.  Ironically, the match did not last 30 minutes after a transportation challenge saw HC waiting over 90 minutes for the Lodge team to reach the Gym.

The Lodge boys also faced a stiff challenge from Rojani Shurland-Agard, Morgan Holder-Briggs and Mekhi Miller to sink to the Deighton Griffith 20-25, 18-25. Ameer Callender fought a losing battle for the Griffins.

All of the quarterfinals games ended in straights sets with dark horses the Alleyne boys defeating the St. Michael School 25-15, 25-18 and Christ Church Foundation School stopping the Alleyne girls 25-21, 28-26.  Barbados youth player Gabrielle Sandiford and Tiffany Layne gave Foundation the edge.

The semifinals will be staged tomorrow at the Gym. Foundation will meet QC while HC takes on the Lester Vaughan School.  The boys’ action pits the Alleyne against Combermere and Deighton clashes with HC.

The Lester Vaughan School continued their unbeaten run while snapping hosts the Christ Church Foundation School’s three games winning streak when the NSc’s C2A under 16 volleyball action continued Monday at Church Hill.

In a match impacted by strong winds and poor serves the Lester Vaughan girls came from 15-18 to win the match 25-23, 19-25, 15-7.  With the battle locked at one set a piece Foundation  were undone by tall Jazmyn Nurse in the decider who piloted Lester Vaughan to a daunting lead of 12-4 with some telling serves.

Both sides fielded some extremely green players with Nurse and Rochelle Collymore who play for Carlton smartly utilizing a two person system to earn the points for Lester Vaughan.  Under 17 Barbados player Gabrielle Sandiford and Tiffany Layne who play for Foundation United implemented a similar style to give their school unfulfilled hopes of winning the match.

16 new FIVB Beach Volleyball Coaches certified. 🌎🏐

Following an intensive five-day programme which commenced on Saturday, May 23 and concluded yesterday, Wednesday, May 27, 16 coaches from Barbados, Jamaica, Cuba, Cayman Islands, and Trinidad & Tobago have successfully completed the FIVB Beach Volleyball Coaches Certification Course and are now officially FIVB-certified beach volleyball coaches.

Hosted at the NSC Sand Court, Wildey Gymnasium, and the Barbados Olympic Centre, the course combined both practical and theoretical components, challenging participants through on-court sessions, classroom learning, and final examinations designed to strengthen coaching knowledge and international standards within the sport.

The programme was led by FIVB Instructor Claudia Costa Oliveira, whose wealth of international experience as both a former professional player and coach brought tremendous value to the course and participants.

This milestone represents another important step in the continued growth and professional development of beach volleyball in Barbados as education and coach development remain critical to sustaining this progress and creating stronger pathways for athletes.

The Barbados Volleyball Association extends sincere thanks to Olympic Solidarity and the Barbados Olympic Association, whose support made the hosting of this course possible.

As the BVA continues its mission to develop all facets of beach volleyball — from athletes to coaches, officials, and administrators — preparations are already underway to host a Referees Course in late June 2026 as part of the ongoing effort to elevate the sport throughout Barbados and the wider Caribbean.

The Barbados Volleyball Association officially commenced the FIVB Beach Volleyball Coaches Certification Course on Saturday, May 23rd, marking another important step in the continued growth and development of beach volleyball in Barbados and the Caribbean. While Barbados has previously hosted FIVB Beach Volleyball coaching seminars, this is the first certification course being hosted locally.

The intensive programme is being facilitated by FIVB Course Instructor Claudia Costa Oliviera, a Brazilian beach volleyball specialist with extensive international experience as both a player and coach, who currently coaches in Switzerland. The course has attracted participants from Barbados, Cayman Islands, Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, and Cuba, highlighting the regional interest in advancing beach volleyball coaching standards across the Caribbean.

Hosted at the National Sports Council Sand Court Facility and the Barbados Olympic Centre, the course combines both classroom and on-court training, focusing on the technical, tactical, and methodological aspects of beach volleyball coaching. Participants will engage in five full days of intensive theoretical and practical sessions and will be required to successfully complete both practical and theoretical examinations in order to earn certification.

The Barbados Volleyball Association continues to place strong emphasis on coach education as a key pillar in strengthening the sport locally and regionally. The hosting of this certification course reflects the Association’s commitment to improving coaching standards, building capacity, and creating sustainable pathways for the future growth of beach volleyball throughout the Caribbean.

The course is funded through Olympic Solidarity, facilitated by the Barbados Olympic Association, whose support has made the hosting of this important developmental initiative possible.

Two days after pulling off a Houdini like escape, the Alleyne School’s under 16 volleyball boys’ team staged a repeat performance when the National Sports Council’s C2A schools’ competition was continued yesterday.

On Monday the Alleyne lads came from a set down and 5-10 in the decider to shock Harrison College at Crumpton Street. Then yesterday the boys from Belleplaine surged from a set down and 5-12 in the decider to stun the home team Deighton Griffith Secondary 15-25, 25-23, 15-13.

Alleyne’s hero was Jakir Clarke who held his serve from 8-13 to launch his team to another remarkable victory.

The boys’ and girls’ defending champions found no such heroes as they lost games on the road.  Harrison College girls who are the three peat queens went to Husbands, St. James without National Junior player Cuzarah Batson and lost to Queens’ College 18-25, 6-25.

Two times boys champions the Christ Church Foundation School went to Massiah Street, St. John to be dismissed by the Lodge School 25-19, 25-13. Foundation’s girls edged the Griffins 25-17, 22-25, 15-11 while HC boys rebounded from the loss to the Alleyne taking out QC 27-25, 25-19.

The lone girls’ game contested at Cane Garden, St. Thomas,  saw the home side the Lester Vaughan School crushing the St. Michael School 25-11, 25-3.
