Last Friday, six of our racers successfully completed the 20-Minute Version of a Combined FTHR & MHR Test. This important assessment helped gather more accurate data on the riders’ fitness levels and heart rate zones, which will play a vital role in planning future training programs.

The test was expertly conducted by Zia Hasan , while overall supervision was provided by Subir Mitra.

A driver who took a selfie, sent messages and scrolled Instagram in the four minutes before he killed a cyclist has been jailed for five years and two months.

Matthew Isherwood, 28, struck James Lawley on Oxcliffe Road near Morecambe as the lifelong club cyclist rode out to marshal at a local race. Digital forensics showed a Snapchat selfie, messages to several contacts and Instagram browsing in the four minutes before impact. Three minutes afterwards he messaged: "I've just hit someone."

Moments after Mr Lawley was thrown into the road, a second motorist, 64 year old Kevin Dawson, drove over him and did not stop. Dawson told police he believed he had hit debris. He admitted causing death by careless driving and received an eight month suspended sentence, a 12 month driving ban and a home monitoring order.

Isherwood pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving at Preston Crown Court and was banned from driving for seven years and seven months on top of his prison term.

Lancashire Police said they hope the case stands as a lasting reminder of the fatal consequences of picking up a phone behind the wheel.

Two drivers were sentenced. One rider never reached the race he set out to support. How the law weighs a cyclist's life remains the hardest question this case leaves behind.
