Most Bangladeshi cricketers tend to announce retirements through Facebook posts, exhibition matches and press conferences. Some just simply never announce retirement. Yes, some players like Mashrafe Mortaza and Mahmudullah have a history of retiring from the ground but their on-ground retirement was for a particular format, not International Cricket as a whole. Not to mention, some players are also notorious for causing a lot of drama when retirement is the question.
Khaled Mahmud Sujon and Mohammad Rafique are exceptions in this regard as they are the only Bangladeshi cricketers to bid farewell to International Cricket "from the ground". I am sure that most people already know this but did you know that Khaled Mahmud Sujon actually retired thrice only to reverse it twice? It all started in 2003.
Back in 2003, Mahmud was Bangladesh's captain and as we know from history, Bangladesh was winless in all formats. Obviously, there were criticisms and calls for him to step down but he was adamant. As reported by BBC Sports on 12th November 2003, Khaled Mahmud stated that he wished to continue despite whitewashes in the Test and one-day series to England. He was quoted to have said, "I don't want to quit right now." He later added, "The decision on captaincy will be made by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the selectors, but I would like to continue." He was also hopeful to captain the team in the upcoming Zimbabwe Tour. He said, "It's a tough job but we have two months before the next series in Zimbabwe. I want to work hard and be on top of my game by then."
However, BCB axed him, appointing Habibul Bashar as the new captain, and even dropped him from the Zimbabwe Tour's squad. Right then, he retired. ESPNcricinfo stated, "Habibul Bashar, the new captain, urged Mahmud to reconsider, saying that he was a good influence on the discipline of the team, but Mahmud claimed he had taken the decision after close consultation with his family." Head Coach Dav Whatmore and selector Faruq Ahmed did not sound much bothered though. Whatmore said, "This is the best possible side we have now. They are confident of doing better." Faruq added, "We chose the best player for the captain's job."
Just 3 days later, Mahmud went Uno reverse. "I have been repeatedly requested to reconsider my decision. There were requests from every corner that compelled me to give the decision a second thought. Since they still believe in me, I had no other option but to honour their faith. I want to pay back the confidence they showed to me," said Mahmud to Daily Star explaining his reasons for carrying on.
There was no excessive dismay from the fans or media but the board was quite adamant not to let him go. Although BCB assured that the board merely requested Mahmud to reconsider his decision, the opposite is also believed to be true. After all the drama, Mahmud was back in the Zimbabwe Tour's squad too and contributed to Bangladesh's first win after 5 years with a cameo of 22 runs off 16 balls.
2 years later, on 8th October 2005, Khaled Mahmud once again announced his retirement. He was quoted by BBC Sports, "I think it's the perfect time to quit as I don't find a permanent place in the team these days," Fast forward 24 hours and Mahmud told Daily Star that he is in fact "not retiring". He said, "Hours after the BBC broke the news, I received several phone calls from the media to know whether the story was actually true or not. But I wish to state that I never officially wrote to the Bangladesh Cricket Board of my intention to quit the international game." He further confused matters by adding, "However, I admit I told the BBC that I had made my mind up to quit the game but not right at the moment. I will likely announce my retirement in the next home game".
Jump 4 months and once again Khaled Mahmud Sujon declared his international retirement. Just 2 days before the 1st match of the Bangladesh v Sri Lanka ODI series at Bogura, Mahmud, in a crowded press conference with Dav Whatmore beside him, tearfully announced his retirement from International Cricket. "Besides, many young cricketers are knocking the door to enter into the international cricket and I think they should get the chance in the international cricket to prove their worth," said Mahmud as he burst into tears. "I'm with Bangladesh team for nearly 10 years and enjoyed a number of memorable moments. I thank to Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for giving me the opportunity. I also thank to people of Bangladesh, fans and my family members who gave me plenty of support throughout the career," He further added.
This time, however, it was real. He bid farewell to International Cricket from the ground with a standing ovation from the home crowd. He also top-scored 36 runs off 62 balls with 4 fours and a six coming in at number 7 out of Bangladesh's meagre total of just 118. Speaking of his retirement, ESPNcricinfo stated, "At 35, he was a positive geriatric in such a youthful side. Mahmud will continue to play club cricket, and the chances are that he will pop up again in some capacity. Bangladesh cannot afford to lose someone with his wealth of experience."
