Dimuth Karunaratne thrives on game of patience

Revamped batting approach yields Sri Lanka captain's highest Test score

Be patient until you get settled at the crease, then trust yourself to catch up on the scoring rate later. This, essentially, is what Dimuth Karunaratne told himself as he made a start on the innings that produced his highest Test score.

Karunaratne's 244 off 437 balls was the highest individual score by a Sri Lanka batsman since 2014, and only their second double century in six years. It allowed the hosts to surpass Bangladesh's 541 for 7 declared, and made safe their situation in the game.

Karunaratne said three failures during the recent Tests in the West Indies had prompted a re-think in his Test batting approach, and helped yield these results. He'd made scores of 12, 3 and 1 in the Caribbean, before finishing that tour with a 75.

"In the West Indies I was trying to score runs quickly in the first few overs and really get among the runs," he said. "But because that was unsuccessful I talked to the coach and asked him what I was doing wrong. He said as an opener just wait until you get set, because when you do that you make a big score, and that's your game."

Mominul satisfied with Bangladesh's
all-round improvements

Bangladesh Test skipper Mominul Haque is satisfied with his team's effort in the drawn first Test against Sri Lanka. No play was possible in the final session of the opening Test because as rain had the final say in a game that saw 1289 runs scored.

The result ended a sequence of eight consecutive defeats on the bounce for Bangladesh, who lost six white-ball games in New Zealand after dropping the home Test series 0-2. Mominul's captaincy had come under scrutiny after the loss to West Indies, which left him with a solitary win from six Tests.

"I am happy as this was a total team effort. We could not perform well in home and away series and after losing the home series against West Indies at home earning draw is a positive sign," he told reporters after the match. "This will always give us confidence and if we can perform as a unit we are always in a good position.

Mominul said that Tamim Iqbal's breezy 90 set the tone for his team's batting performance that saw Nazmul Hossain score a cracking 163, proving his credentials with his maiden Test 100, while the captain himself went on to get his first ton outside home. "I think Tamim bhai set the tone for us as his 90 runs innings was very important. Everyone has his own style and he (Tamim) is batting like this for quite some time. I think Shanto was outstanding but I am happy that everyone had done well,'' he said adding that he is happy to earn his maiden Test hundred abroad.

"It is very satisfying to say the least [getting a ton away from home], as I have always tried my best to contribute for my team, but unfortunately couldn't score a ton before outside Bangladesh, so I'm very delighted to finally be able to do it, as it is my duty to lead from the front, as the Test skipper of Bangladesh."

Mominul said that he was happy with the way Taskin Ahmed bowled after returning to the longer format following a long break and added that it was a reward of his hard work during the last one and a half year.

"I have enjoyed Taskin's bowling a lot, as he has come back to the Test side after a long time, and he has proved his worth, as it didn't seem like he was playing only his sixth Test match. He has worked hard for a long time to do this, and his disciplined bowling for the long time consistently has amazed me a lot.

"If you want to pick 20 wickets you need five bowlers and we need these kinds of approach and attack if we want to take our cricket into the next level," he said.
