Lakshmipur District (Chittagong Division) with an area of 1455.96 km², is a district of Bangladesh bounded by Chandpur District on the north, Bhola and Noakhali districts upazilas on the south, Noakhali District on the east, Barisal and Bhola districts and the Meghna and on the west. Lakshmipur (Town) stands on the bank of the Rahmatkhali, consists of 12 wards and 22 mahallas. The area of the town is 16.88 km². The town has a population of 65398; male 52.07%, female 47.93%. The density of population is 3874 per km². The literacy rate among the town people is 45.1%.

Administration Lakshmipur thana was established under Noakhali district in 1860. Lakshmipur was transformed into subdivision in 1979 and was elevated to a district in 1984. It consists of 4 upazilas, 3 municipalities, 30 wards, 55 mahallas, 47 union parishads, 445 mouzas and 536 villages. The upazilas are lakshmipur sadar, raipur, ramganj and ramgati. Historical events Lakshmipur district area had been a part of the kingdom of Bhulua at the beginning of the thirteenth century. Lakshmipur is said to have been a military outpost during the Mughal and Company period.Still there is a road named Suja Badsher Rasta. When Shah Suja was defeated by his brother Awrangjeb, he escaped from the area constructing a road for his immortality and according to the history the name of the villages in the northern side of Lakshmipur like Khilbaisa, Matlabpur etc. were given by Suja or on his comments. From the sixteenth to the nineteenth century this area used to produce huge quantity of salt and exported them outside. It was on the issue of salt production that the Salt Movement occurred in this area. The inhabitants of this district had important role in the indigo resistance movement, Sannyasi uprising, swadeshi movement and Debt Arbitration Movement. During the Swadeshi Movement Mahatma Gandhi travelled through the district and often stayed at Kafilatali Akhra and at Sreerampur Rajbari in Ramganj. The rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam visited Lakshmipur town in June 1926. On this occasion a silver plate and a silver cup were presented to the poet on behalf of the residents of the town. During the war of liberation in 1971 seventeen battles were fought between the freedom fighters and the Pak occupation army. ইতিহাসঃ-
সর্ব প্রথম ১৮৬০ সালে নোয়াখালী জেলার অধীনে লক্ষ্মীপুর থানা গঠিত হয়।
লক্ষ্মীপুর কে ১৯৭৯ সালে উপজেলায় এবং ১৯৮৪ সালে জেলা পর্যায়ে উন্নিত করা হয়। এটি ৫ টি উপজেলা, ৪টি পৌরসভা, ৩০ টি ওয়ার্ড, ৫৫ টি মহল্লা, ৪৭ টি ইউনিয়ন পরিষদ, ৪৪৫ টি মৌজা এবং ৫৩৬ টি গ্রাম নিয়ে গঠিত। উপজেলা গুলো হল লক্ষীপুর সদর, রায়পুর, রামগঞ্জ, রামগতি এবং কমলনগর।
ঐতিহাসিক দিক থেকে তেরো শতকের শুরুতে লক্ষীপুর জেলা এরিয়া ভুলুয়া রাজ্যের অন্তর্গত ছিল। মুঘল আমলে লক্ষ্মীপুর কে বলা হত মিলিটারী আউটপোস্ট। ষোল থেকে উনিশ শতকে এই এলাকা প্রচুর পরিকমাণে লবণ উত্পাদন এবং রপ্তানীর কাজে ব্যবহৃ হত।
স্বদেশী আন্দোলনের সময় ভারতের মহাত্মা গান্ধী এই জেলা সফর করেছিলেন। ঐ সময় প্রায়ই তিনি রামগঞ্জ থানার শ্রীরামপুর রাজবাড়ি এলাকার কাফিলাতলি আখরায় থাকতেন। ১৯২৬ সালের জুন মাসে বিদ্রোহী কবি কাজী নজরুল ইসলাম লক্ষ্মীপুর জেলা শহর সফর করেন। এই উপলক্ষে লক্ষ্মীপুর শহর বাসীর পক্ষ থেকে তাকে একটি সিলভার প্লেট এবং একটি সিলভার কাপ উপহার দেওয়া হয়।
১৯৭১ সালে মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সময় ১৭ ব্যাটলে মুক্তিযোদ্ধা এবং পাক হানাদার বাহিনীর সাথে তুমুল যুদ্ধ সংগঠিত হয়।
