An 8km challenge in Vieira de Leiria 🇵🇹 for the brothers: streets, gravel, sand, uneven terrain.
Way out of their comfort zone, but a perfect change of rhythm.
Tiago crossed the line 23rd and Telmo 43rd out of 667, taking 1st and 3rd in U23 — and sharing the podium together.

After an intense period in Portugal with two national championships, Telmo focused last week on enjoying the sport and trying something different from his usual 400m.

In Beernem he returned to his first love — high jump — and proved he hadn’t lost the feeling: a clean 1.60m, four years after his last competition.

He also lined up for the 800m, placed in the slowest heat because his PB still stood at 2:12. Telmo took control from the gun and delivered a powerful solo run, stopping the clock at 2:00.56 — a clear sign that his future may well lie in this distance.

Three days later, on his home track in Tielt, he dominated the 600m, once again running solo to victory in 1:25.63, breaking the club record by more than four seconds.

With that, Telmo closes the first part of his summer season. Now it’s time for three weeks in Portugal — sun, family, and a solid training block together with his brother Tiago as they prepare for the Belgian U18 and U20 Championships.

Ten days in Portugal — two championships, one unforgettable journey

A ten‑day stay in Portugal brought two important championships for Tiago and Telmo — first the U18 nationals in Beja, followed by the U20 nationals in Caldas da Rainha. One week, two races, and a whole lot of learning, growth and pride.

Beja — Telmo’s first Portuguese outdoor championship (U18)

Telmo was the first to compete, returning to Beja — the place where Tiago won the national U18 title last year. For Telmo, it was a step into the unknown: new opponents, new surroundings, and the notorious Beja heat. Last year the thermometer hit 42°C during Tiago’s race; this time it was slightly lower, but still scorching.

Despite the conditions, Telmo delivered a strong performance.
He finished his 400m in 51.81, placing 10th overall and 5th in his age group.
He had quietly hoped for a little more, but he can look back with pride. This race was a real learning experience — one he will carry with him into the future.

Caldas da Rainha — the U20 championship for both brothers

One week later, the focus shifted to Caldas da Rainha for the U20 nationals. Tiago had set his sights on this championship, while Telmo was allowed to join after meeting the U20 qualification standard as an U18 athlete.
The conditions were completely different from Beja: around 25°C, but this time the wind was the main challenge.

Tiago raced in the fastest heat and finished in 49.89, placing 6th overall and 2nd in his age group.
Not the time or position he had hoped for, but he left everything on the track. It’s one of those seasons where things feel just a little off — where you sense there’s more inside you, but it doesn’t fully show yet. These moments shape an athlete just as much as the victories.

Telmo, the youngest athlete in the field, was assigned the difficult lane 1. Still, he handled it impressively and ran 51.84, finishing 13th and leaving six athletes behind him. Across both championships, he showed remarkable consistency — now it’s just a matter of time before that big breakthrough comes.

A week to remember

Maybe the times and placings didn’t fully match their ambitions, but this was an unforgettable week for both brothers. Competing together, representing their Portuguese roots, and gaining experience at two national championships — these are moments that stay with you.

Proud of their resilience, their attitude, and the way they carry themselves on and off the track.
On to the next steps.

Yesterday Telmo took an important step in his journey — his first Portuguese outdoor U18 championship.
The competition took place in Beja and it was a leap into the unknown for Telmo: a new environment, new competition, new opponents, the pressure of the recent exam period, and the quiet hope of chasing a new PB.
He finished his 400m in 51.81, placing 10th overall and 5th in his age group.
Not exactly the ending he had hoped for, but that's all part of the sport. He gained experience, handled the stress which will all be valuable in the future. Progress isn’t always visible in the time — sometimes it shows in how you handle the moment. And today, he took a meaningful step forward.

Thank you to our partners Mr.Pizza and Gobanna for their trust and support.
