When people talk about Dougie, they often use #21 or #3 to reflect who he was on the ice.
I use the number 37.
3.7.93 — his birthday.
So of course I’m going to be watching lucky number 37 in the net.

In the next few hours, and then days, and then weeks, we will see Connor Hellebuyck everywhere. People will talk about his story, his training, and his team.
What I also hope they talk about is his advocacy for mental health.
Connor Hellebuyck is a mental health advocate. He works closely with Project 11, created by the True North Youth Foundation. Launched over 10 years ago in honor of late Winnipeg Jets forward Rick Rypien, Project 11’s mission is to provide tools for students in K–12 to proactively manage their mental health, build resilience, and feel comfortable seeking help. The lessons emphasize social-emotional learning — developing self-awareness of feelings, practicing mindfulness, and building positive relationships.
As we celebrate an Olympic win, we also sit with the despair of losing a young man today. A talented athlete. Equally hard-working. Someone who should have been at the top of his career, whose life reportedly ended by his own hand. A 25-year-old NFL wide receiver who, by all outward appearances, had so much ahead of him, but was unable to find peace.
Victory and grief can exist in the same breath. That’s why conversations about mental health matter. Not just in moments of tragedy, but every single day. If we are going to celebrate the strength, discipline, and excellence of our athletes, we must also support their humanity. We must make space for struggle, for honesty, and for help.
Every number on the ice, every jersey on the field, is a person and every person deserves to have another tomorrow.
❤️🤍💙🏒

Hi. It’s January. 2 months from now we’re all going to get together and wonder how the hell it’s been 10 years.
Year 10 falls on a weekend. Friday March 6th. Saturday March 7th.
We would love to see everyone on the ice. Who can help? Ideally- back on the ice in Waltham and at Winchendon. Maybe a tournament? Maybe just a few games. Maybe mix it up, Waltham/Winch/Ravens together on a team? Maybe combine the girls and guys? Maybe who does it best and go against each other?
Bring back the Coaches!!
Sounds like a huge undertaking, and Talk amongst yourselves! Start the conversation!
Let’s do this. For all of us. And for Dougie.
Let’s get the Douglas Jordan Usseglio Memorial Fund built up and give back!

Please 👍🏻like or ❤️heart this post so the algorithm will boost it and it will show up on all followers pages.
Looking forward to seeing you Thursday March 6.
If you can't make it, please take a moment on March 6th to post a message to this page. It can be a message, a picture of where you are you in your life right now, a memory, a picture of your dog or cat or new baby or new grandchild or beautiful sunset. 9 years is a long time and we know that not everyone can make it, but just knowing that you care and you're thinking of him will fill our hearts.🕊️🤍

We are honored to announce two new scholarships are available. We switched focus a little to children in our community. Waltham has such fun summer and school vacation programs and we want to help ensure availability to all.
In memory of Dougie we have started the Summer Fun at Prospect Hill Scholarship and in honor of his sister, Julia, we have created a Kaleidoscope Camp Scholarship.
Today we have awarded the first of
The Waltham Parks and Recreation Department will accept and review all applications and award the scholarship.
We are very excited for this partnership and appreciate the Board accepting our proposal. Standing in the room presenting this to people who knew Dougie, who loved and cared about him was an amazing experience. Such kind words were spoken of him and I know at least one member in the room had a bittersweet moment with me.
Doug's cousin Adam will help in the selection process each time
