Let's be honest... most martial arts schools aren't putting as much effort into real world self-defense as they are into sport. Even the ones that are, don't typically put a lot of effort into weapons defense, and even the ones that do, how many are addressing how to fight WITH weapons?
This is one of the biggest blind spots in self-defense training. Even though in Canada you are not legally allowed to carry weapons for self-defense, many attacks (particularly for women) happen in spaces where weapons are available, and Canadian law allows for using them to protect yourself if it is a reasonable and proportionate response to the threat you are facing.
GHS is about to launch two online weapons defense courses: BASICS (unarmed defenses against common weapons, and ULTIMATE, which includes the use of weapons in a variety of combinations. Stay tuned!

How does knife fighting apply for self-defense? (Read Below 👇)
In Canada it is illegal to carry knives for self-defense, but in many cases (especially for women) it is actually more likely that you will be attacked in your home by someone you know than a stranger in the outside world, where a knife may be available to pick up, and if picking up a knife to defend yourself is a reasonable and proportionate response to the threat you face then our self-defense laws do account for that!

View from the mats displaying the decorative bokken I made to represent the blending of warrior cultures the club represents as well as my real katana. At first I wasn't sure about the industrial look of the chain and padlock on the real one, but it quickly grew on me. I think the over-the-topness of how it's secured hints at the deadliness of it, kind of like it's wearing a Hannibal Lector mask. 😆 If you want to learn to use a katana, ask about our Modern Budo class, every Tuesday and Thursday from 8-9pm!
