⚠️ All provincial parks and protected areas in Kananaskis and the Bow Valley are now under a bear warning due to an abundance of buffalo berry this summer. Bears are easy to surprise when they are eating, and they may be reluctant to move away from their food. Expect to encounter bears and be prepared:
🐻 Make noise and travel in groups
🐻 Be vigilant and look for bear foods and signs (berries and s**t)
🐻 Keep all pets on a leash
🐻 Carry bear spray where it’s accessible and know how and when to use it
🐻 If you see a bear: stop, speak calmly, and slowly leave the area - give them plenty of space

𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻. 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘆. Berry bushes border trails, roads and campgrounds. Black and grizzly bears are feeding on berries right now. 🐻
Please report bear sightings or encounters to Parks Canada Dispatch at 1-877-852-3100.
It is easy to surprise a bear that is focused on feeding. Trail running and cycling place you at much higher risk. To reduce your risk:
📣 Make noise while on trails.
🧑🤝🧑Travel in tight groups.
🌶️ Carry bear spray, ensure it is accessible, and know how to use it.
💩 Watch for fresh bear signs such as s**t. Be especially careful near berry patches.
🚶If you see a bear, stay calm, back away slowly and leave the area. Never run.
