Braiding Sweetgrass - Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I truly believe this is a must-read for anyone interested in deepening their understanding and relationship to stewardship; of children and the earth alike. This beautiful book expertly weaves lessons on parenthood, politics, economy, community and culture within the warmth of traditional Indigenous story telling and the explanations of plant science. Through this lens, the lessons feel both rooted in history and immensely relevant. If you’ve been considering this read, I cannot recommend it enough!

I have yet to meet a new mother who doesn’t put on the cape and become super mom, even in the trenches of newborn life. It’s undeniable that new mothers are often shouldering the majority of the responsibility for caring for their newborn, especially if their partner has to go back to work quite early in the postpartum season. Our overculture praises mothers who can “do it all”, when instead we should be giving new mothers permission not to. We need to give new mothers permission to accept and rely on support, because this is exactly what the tender physiological healing process of postpartum demands. Support in this season is a biological necessity, and when we ignore this need for resourcing, it affects mother’s long term health and vitality. The trickle down effect of resourced mothers are healthier babies, families, and communities 🤎

If there’s a new mother in your life you’d like to help resource, or want to know more about postpartum doula support, send me DM or email me through my website, link in bio ✨

And to all the super moms out there, we see you, we love you, and we want you to take care of you too 🤎

“Healthy parent, healthy baby” is the bare minimum and there IS room for so much more. Informed consent, respected autonomy, loving encouragement, intentional environment, trust in the process: these are the ingredients that raise the bar from “healthy” to whole. No matter what your birth outcome is 🤎

Might ruffle some feathers with this one 🙃🫶🏼

Not every doula is for every family, but I do believe it’s a disservice to your clients to not support every type of birth 🤷🏻‍♀️🫣 We all have biases, but it’s our job as doulas to be able to put ours aside and meet our clients exactly where they’re at. The way birth unfolds is never a guarantee: no matter the birth location, the interventions or lack thereof, or the providers. When we decenter what we believe to be “best” or “right” or “true”, we not only open ourselves to the possibility of being surprised, but we empower our clients to make decisions that feel truly right for them and reduce the stigma that they most definitely have already come across about how they should give birth. Add to their peace, not their pressure 🤎☕️

If some of these feel private or vulnerable to you, it’s because they are!

To hold a family in postpartum is to hold the most private, personal, unglamorous and vulnerable parts of who they are during one of the most tender life transitions they will ever experience.

I see it as an honour when my clients let down their walls and accept the deepest levels of support I’m able to offer them. For most people, it takes a deep level of trust to be taken care of, especially in their own home. This is why choosing a doula you feel truly at ease with is so important. It’s a sacred and reciprocal bond we build with the families we serve! Your vulnerability should always be exchanged for your doula’s discretion, compassion, and deep tending.

If you’re building your village for postpartum, shoot me a DM or fill out an inquiry form on my website! I’d love to chat more about how you want to be cared for in this season 🤎✨
