One of the most dangerous things in bodybuilding is when mental illness gets mistaken for discipline.

Depression.
Anxiety.
Disordered eating.
Obsessive thinking.
ADHD.
Autism.
Trauma.
Personality disorders.

These are real neurological and psychological conditions… yet in bodybuilding they often get brushed off as:

“Prep brain.”
“You’re just tired.”
“Take a rest day.”
“Sleep more.”
“Stop being emotional.”

Here’s the problem.

A lot of symptoms of mental distress look exactly like behaviors the sport rewards.

Extreme rigidity becomes “discipline.”
Obsession becomes “dedication.”
Food fear becomes “being locked in.”
Isolation becomes “focus.”

So sometimes what people celebrate as commitment…
is actually someone quietly deteriorating mentally.

Contest prep is one of the most psychologically demanding things you can do.

Low calories.
Hormonal disruption.
Sleep disturbance.
Constant body scrutiny.
Pressure to perform.

For someone already managing mental health challenges, prep doesn’t create the problem…

It amplifies it.

And if coaches don’t understand the psychology behind what they’re seeing, they can easily push athletes past a breaking point instead of toward growth.

Athletes are not just physiques.

They are nervous systems, histories, and human beings.
And the sport needs more coaches who understand both performance and mental health.

Because sometimes the strongest coaching decision…
is not pushing harder.

It’s knowing when something deeper is going on.

Turns out mixing citrulline, caffeine, creatine, sodium and bad decisions was the answer 💪🏼

I am pro-medication. I’ve worked in psychiatry. I’ve seen antidepressants save lives. I’ve seen them stabilize women who were drowning. They are a tool. A powerful one.

But tools require education.

In bodybuilding, we obsess over:
– 5g carb changes
– sodium manipulation
– cortisol
– sleep cycles
– PED dosing
– water retention

Yet many competitors stay on the same SSRI dose for 8–10+ years with zero reassessment… even after losing 20+ lbs, building significant muscle, or entering prep.

That’s not anti-medication. That’s a gap in education.

When body composition changes, drug distribution changes. When stress increases in prep, neurotransmitter demands shift. When dopamine is already taxed from low calories, drive and intensity matter.

As a psych nurse and a pro bodybuilder, I don’t guess.

We track:
• mood
• blood pressure
• drive
• emotional range
• recovery
• performance

Medication can stabilize the storm.

But competitors deserve to understand how it interacts with metabolism, motivation, and physique development.

If you’re a competitor on antidepressants and feel like something is “off” in prep not emotionally unstable, just flat, stalled, or muted that conversation matters.

You deserve coaching that understands your brain and your body.

If this resonates, follow my page for education that bridges mental health and elite physique development.

Or DM me “BRAIN & BODY” and let’s talk about what you’re navigating.

You don’t need less support. You need better understanding.

Prep will test your physique… but it will expose your psychology.

Most people don’t quit because their body isn’t changing.

They quit because they don’t know how to handle the phase where it feels like nothing is working.

This sport isn’t about who can diet the hardest. It’s about who can stay the most regulated while their body adapts.

If you’re in prep and second-guessing every mirror check, every carb gram, every cardio session… you don’t need more restriction.

You need strategy.
You need perspective.
You need someone who can zoom out when your brain is zooming in.

I’m peak offseason right now. 213 lbs this morning.
6’5 in heels. About 40 lbs above projected stage weight.
And I’m not hiding.

I’m performing. Strength is insane. Sleep is locked in. Recovery is on point. Hormones feel good. Mindset clear.

This is what my build phase looks like. And I’m still posing.

Not because I look stage lean. Not because it’s pretty. But because it’s part of the job.

Posing is neuromuscular training. It’s isometric contraction. It’s motor control. When I hit a back pose at 213, I have to actively recruit glutes, hamstrings, lats, spinal erectors.
There’s no “leanness illusion” doing the work for me. It’s pure muscle control.

That improves motor unit recruitment. It strengthens my mind-muscle connection. It carries over into my lifts. If I can’t control it on stage, I can’t maximize it in the gym.

I used to struggle with being this heavy. Now I embrace it. Because this size is intentional. This strength is intentional. This phase is intentional.

You don’t accidentally build an elite physique. You build it by respecting every phase.

So yes, I’m 40 lbs above stage weight.

And I’m still practicing. Because when the body fat comes off, I won’t be learning how to pose. I’ll be sharpening something I’ve already mastered.

That’s the difference between dieting for a show… and building like a pro.

My job every single day? Execute.

Hit the plan ☑️
Move with discipline ☑️
Train like it matters ☑️

Because how you live when no one’s watching
shows up under the bar.

Sleep. Food. Water. Stress. That’s not “extra.” That’s the foundation.

You don’t get elite results from chaotic habits. Control what you can. Cut the excuses. Stack the wins. Stop overcomplicating it. This isn’t magic. It’s maturity.

Small disciplined days build dangerous physiques.
Show up on purpose. Or stay average.
