Ever watched your child bow at the door, shout mid-kick, or count "hana, dul, set" β and quietly wondered why? You're not alone, and there are no silly questions here. π₯
Every little ritual in a taekwondo class carries meaning. The bow is respect, not submission. That sharp yell β a kihap β drives power and locks in focus. Training barefoot builds real strength and balance. Counting in Korean keeps us connected to where this art was born. Even the "never wash your belt" myth has a story behind it (though hygiene wins, every time!). Once you know the why, every class makes a little more sense β for kids and parents alike.
Swipe through all 6 questions you were maybe too shy to ask. β‘οΈ

π₯ Do you know the language of taekwondo?
Before you can master the kicks β learn the words.
Here are 5 Korean terms every TKD student should know (and actually understand):
1οΈβ£ λ볡 (Dobok) β Your uniform. Wear it with pride.
2οΈβ£ λμ₯ (Dojang) β The training hall. More than a gym β a sacred space.
3οΈβ£ μ¬λ²λ (Sabomnim) β Your instructor. Respect the title.
4οΈβ£ μ°¨λ · (Charyot) β Attention. When you hear it, everything stops.
5οΈβ£ κΈ°ν© (Kihap) β The spirit yell. Own it on every strike.
Language is part of taekwondo. When you understand the words, you understand the art.

Three different worlds. One uncomfortable truth.
Park Jin-young built K-pop's biggest acts by refusing to work with talented people who lacked character. Shohei Ohtani signed the richest contract in sports history β and still bends down to pick up trash. Son Heung-min stayed in the stadium after losing the Champions League final, finding every fan who had traveled across the world to be there.
None of them were born this way. They chose it. Repeatedly. In the small moments when no one was watching.
Talent is a starting point. Character is the destination.

π 94% of female C-suite executives worldwide were athletes
π High school athletes are 43% more likely to reach upper management
(Source: EY Global Survey Β· Cornell University 60-Year Study)
It's not about being the best player.

Sport doesn't just build fitness.
It builds the 5 traits that research proves lead to success:
β
Discipline
β
Teamwork
β
Resilience
β
Goal Setting
β
Mental Toughness
---
At Unity Taekwondo, we give your child
three proven paths to build those traits:
π₯ Black Belt Program β personal achievement, goal by goal
β Demo Team β team contribution, performing under pressure
π Leadership Program β the skill that top executives say
accelerated their careers the most
The research is clear. The earlier they start,

Math and Taekwondo have more in common than you think. π₯
Most of us will never use the quadratic formula again. Most of us will never throw a roundhouse kick in real life. So why do we teach them?
Because neither one was ever about the subject.
Math trains your mind to sit with confusion β and find a way through. Taekwondo trains your body to show up when it's hard β and keep going anyway. Both are building the same invisible skill: the ability to do hard things, even when you don't feel ready.
Every belt earned. Every problem solved. Your child is learning to trust themselves.
That's the real lesson. And it follows them everywhere.

"A true champion is not someone who never fails. It is someone who refuses to be defined by failure."
The mat teaches us more than kicks and blocks. It teaches us how to think and that mindset is the most powerful thing you'll ever develop.
Swipe through 7 perspectives on resilience that go far beyond taekwondo β‘οΈ
β¦ Stop blaming. Start reflecting.
β¦ Control what you can control.
β¦ Have the courage to acknowledge strength in others.
β¦ Ask better questions.
β¦ See failure as feedback, not a full stop.
Because the value of winning fades. But the value of becoming someone who never stops growing? That's eternal.

"Your Dobok Is a Mirror of Yourself."
A clean dobok isn't about appearances.
It's a way to show care for the person in front of you.
It's a show of respect for the art you practice.
It's a reflection of the discipline you carry into every class.
At Unity Taekwondo, we opened our doors in Chilliwack in January 2025
with a mission: to inspire and empower students through martial arts,
built on the values of respect, confidence, and perseverance.
Whether you're just starting out or have trained for years β
the dobok you wear tells the story of how seriously you take this journey.
We'd love to be part of that story.
