Victory Gardens. and old idea whose time has come around again.
Victory Gardens plays off the WWII era campaign that encouraged the public to utilize residential space for food production. This was an attempt to reduce the public’s reliance on agricultural food production and become self sustained. People unified around a common goal to work together as a community to assist in the war effort.
Growing food became a part of perhaps, one of the few, peaceful contributions to the war effort. A resounding sense of camaraderie prevailed among the people that participated; like women in the factories and on the tractors, Victory Gardens provided a sense of pride and contribution towards one’s country.
Today, there is an inherent need to reflect on the positive and rewarding impacts that Victory Gardens had socially, economically and environmentally.
