I’m looking for a suggestion on best rice for cabbage rolls. Will be using sour cabbage leaves.
In this story, a little dancers poyas (woven sash) becomes magical and takes him on a dancing adventure in the night sky.

The book is dedicated to "all parents, especially those in rural communities, who played an active role in organizing Ukrainian dance clubs, fundraising events, and festivals on the prairies. Thanks to their efforts, children made lifelong friends and remained physically active during long winter months. More importantly, young dancers had fun while gaining a deeper understanding of their identity as Ukrainian Canadians"

We know it's been a tough year for dancers and dance groups and cannot wait until we can safely gather for performances in person once again.

"Good Night, My Little Dancer!/Добраніч, малий танцюристе!" is available for purchase at ACUA Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts in Edmonton, several locations in Saskatoon and Koota Ooma Ukrainian Books & Gifts in Toronto. Keep your eye out this year for the author's second book about a little girl's dancing adventure!

David Desfosses, 27

David is an Automotive Service Technician at Heartland Ford Sales Inc.

He has a wife (Veselka dancer Kaylee) a daughter (Emily), a dog, 3 cats, and a snake.

David has 18 years of Ukrainian dance experience. He started at St Basil’s school, where our Artistic Director Trish was one of his first teachers! As he got older he danced with the Kupalo ensemble, as well as Troyanda Society of Ukrainian Culture & Heritage and has been with Veselka for 2 years now.

David is most excited for the Guys Dance in the June show. His favourite region to dance is Volyn. David says he joined Veselka when he just showed up to rehearsal one day and never left.

He got started in Ukrainian dancing when he was 5 years old. His mom said “hey, you’re gonna do Ukrainian dance.” David is the second youngest of 5 siblings, all of whom Ukrainian danced. David says the dancing with Veselka is great but the social aspect of our group is also a lot of fun. David says he loves being able to reconnect with people he grew up dancing with (see if you can spot some Veselka members in David’s throwback photos!)

David has gone on dance tours in the US and Canada, as well as Ukraine and Ireland.

Come see David perform at our June show!

In case you ever wondered……

Ribbons of the Ukrainian wreath! 😊

Ukrainian ribbons occupied an important place in the life of every Ukrainian girl. They were not only a decoration, but also a talisman... and every colour carried certain symbolism.

Each of the colours had a symbolic meaning. Thus, ribbons of different colours symbolized:

light brown - feeding ground,
yellow - the sun;
light green and dark green - youth, beauty;
blue and blue - a symbol of sky and water, which add strength and health;
orange - bread;
purple - a symbol of wisdom;
crimson - a symbol of sincerity and sincerity;
pink - a symbol of prosperity;
white - the memory of the dead.
The sequence of their placement was also special. The LIGHT-BROWN ribbon was fastened first in the centre, on both sides of it knitted on YELLOW, then - LIGHT GREEN and DARK GREEN ribbons, behind them - BLUE and BLUE, then - OCTOBER, OCTOBER RASPBERRY, and behind them - PINK.

As for the WHITE ribbons, given their symbolic meaning, certain requirements were met. So they were only included if their ends were embroidered with gold and silver, then the white ribbon on the right side was a symbol of the sun, and on the left - the moon. 🌚

General information

Troyanda History:

In September 1975, Olga Friesen began to explore the possibility of offering Ukrainian Language and dance classes to interested area residents. It was during the planning stages for these classes that she contacted Alberta Culture and was fortunate to get support and assistance of Dave Biltek. This resulted in the formation of the Troyanda Society of Ukrainian Culture and Heritage. On November 12, 1975, classes in both language and dance got underway at the RecPlex with 47 students registered in language and 41 in dance. Classes throughout the first year were conducted by Olga Friesen with the voluntary assistance of Mrs. Eva Hannas in language and Mrs. Helen Pollard in dance. In the next two years teaching both language and dance alternated between Miss. Iris Zwozdesky of Edmonton and local personnel.

In addition to the language and dance classes, they held St. Nicholas Day concert, Easter egg workshops and an Easter egg and bake sales. The dance groups have also performed at various centers in the City as well as around the area.

Executive involved in the formation of the Society Included:

President, Helen Lavoie; Vice president, Roma Gauk; Secretary Treasurer, Tony Medwid; School Director, Olga Friesen; Directors: Florence Helete, Elsie Lazaruk, Lester Prokopczak. Others that became involved in the following year included Janet Lougheed, and Julian Nahnybida.

The first concert was held on May 1, 1977 at the Grande Prairie Regional College Auditorium. The program included singing and poetry recital by the language class and dancing by the dance group.

After more than 30 years in the community of Grande Prairie, the Troyanda Society of Ukrainian Culture & Heritage continues to grow and prosper. The Society strives to provide programs and services that honor the culture and traditions of the Ukraine. Our Troyanda dancers are the most well known part of our society. In addition to performing at Troyanda's special events, the Troyanda dancers perform in support of other community organizations. They appear at the QE II Festival of Trees, the Trumpeter Hotel Seniors Christmas Dinner, Canada Day Celebrations, and many others. Our dancers have attended festivals and competitions in Peace River, Vermilion, Calgary, St. Paul, Lloydminster, Edmonton, and Jasper.

Our Ukrainian Christmas and Malanka celebrations, Easter egg classes and Year-End Ukrainian Dance Concert are Troyanda events that the community looks forward to each year. These events have become traditions for the Troyanda Society and we hope to entertain the community for many years to come. Troyanda also continues to develop new events to celebrate and highlight Ukrainian culture.
