Just a gentle reminder if a dancer will be absent please take a moment and mark it in the Portal. It’s very helpful for us to know from a planning perspective who will be in class.

Additionally, if your dancer needs to leave early that is helpful for both teachers and overseers to know ahead of time.

MAKE UP CLASSES
It has been great to see families monitoring their dancers’ health and keeping them home when unwell. You can make-up classes in any class of the same age range- provided there is space. This is why it is really great for us to know if you will not be attending class- so we can give this space to someone making their class up.

I got a little teary eyed watching these three beauties taking an adult contemporary class here in Chelsea!

All three are graduated dancers from my other school Guelph Youth Dance and who are currently going to Ottawa University!

So happy to be seeing them here each week!

⭐⭐⭐

Meet our teachers!💫
Sarah Cook Cu***ng
Sarah is a dancer, educator and musician born and raised in Guelph, ON. As a proud alumni of the GYD Company, she is thrilled to be joining the teaching staff at GYD. Sarah began dancing at the age of 3, and has studied ballet, contemporary, jazz, Modern, lyrical and tap. She has worked with a variety of choreographers, including Sylvie Desrosiers, Mio Sakamoto, Janet Johnson (including as a guest performer in “The Returned” featured at the 2022 Guelph Dance festival), Kelly Steadman, Megan Robinson, Meghan MacNeil, Kween, Katie Ewald, and Evadne Kelly, among others.

Sarah is currently a student at the University of Guelph, and is working towards a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Child Studies and Neuroscience. She plans to pursue a career in education and teach at the elementary level upon the completion of her undergraduate degree. As a teacher, Sarah strives to create an atmosphere of inclusion, self expression, discipline and fun to ensure that all students put forth their best effort and thrive.

Outside of the studio, Sarah is an emergency supply teacher for the Upper Grand District School Board, Camp Manager for Guelph Dance, and tutors. In her spare time, she can be found experimenting in the kitchen, hanging out with family or friends, dreaming about her next vacation, or (most likely) curled up on the couch, reading.

Sarah is looking forward to another amazing year of dance, teaching and fun!

Dancer Screening Day at GYD
with Heather Finn, Registered Physiotherapist

Saturday October 3, 2026
12:30pm-3:00pm

When a new dance year begins, it's time for Screening Day with GYD teacher and physiotherapist Heather Finn! Screening benefits dancers of any age who are growing, boosting their dance fitness after a break, or facing new challenges in technique class or choreography. Dancer screening helps dancers 1) objectively evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, 2) set goals and reach their full potential, and 3) encourages healthy communication between dancers, their families, teachers and care providers. Screening costs $50 for a 25 minute session (receipt provided if you have insurance coverage).

Meet our amazing teachers!

Heather Finn
Heather grew up dancing, which fostered her curiosity about how the body moves and works. She studied ballet with Carolyn Zettel in Waterloo, modern and break dance at McMaster University Centre for Dance, and danced professionally with Hamilton Dance Company, Caroline Barrière Danse (Ottawa) and Suzette Sherman/Dancetheatre David Earle (Guelph).
Heather completed her Bachelor of Arts and Science in 2001 and her Masters in Physiotherapy in 2004. She apprenticed with Joanna Speller of the National Ballet School, researched perfectionism in dancers with Donna Krasnow of York University Dance Department, and completed a dance medicine internship with Sunday Homitz of the Cleveland Ballet. She currently works at Speed River Physiotherapy with post-graduate training in orthopaedics, pelvic health, and Clinical Pilates (Mat, Reformer and Total Barre). Heather is a member of Healthy Dancer Canada, the Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists, Canadian Physiotherapy Association, and the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science.
As coordinator of the Wellness Program at Guelph Youth Dance since 2018, Heather plans to infuse dancer wellness into her conditioning classes, and support her students both inside and out!
